The hate is strong with Peter King

No, you don't. You have Chud talking about Cam's transition which should be completed by his 7th-8th season. That's all.

Right, and the Wild Cat is still in legitimate usage today... at the bottom of playbooks. The Read Option is a gimmick. Shanhan knows it, Rivera knows it and Harbaugh knows it, but hey, if you want to live on fantasy island then be my guest. Tampa, Carolina, Seattle, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Baltimore all found success on stopping it last year.

Really? What 'Old' Gettleman says has no influence on what Rivera and Cam do on Sundays? Okay, how about what Rivera says himself? Ron specifically said Cam and the offense were going back to the fundamentals and traditional playcalling. Who are you kidding here?

Read option isn't a gimmick nor is it comparable to the wildcat. Read option basically play action for athletic QBs.....and it is why it has become a staple in high school and college for years now (something the wildcat never did). Wildcat was used in college as a gimmick....read option is simply everyday life and has been for some time.

Like I said, if you don't think Newton is running in 2013 I have some beach front property in Colorado I'd like to sell you. You have presented NOTHING to back your claim.

Gettlemen is the GM. He hires people and drafts people...that is how he influences what happens on the field.

He didn't hire Rivera or draft Newton....he inherited them. He can either embrace them or move on from them. He isn't a coach, nor has he ever been a GM.....the control he will have per you is HUGE and you are making lots of pretty wild assumptions given what Newton is and Rivera has proven.

Even Gettlemen said the read option will remain an option.....bc he has little option to say otherwise with him keeping Rivera/Cam. But how Cam runs is irrelevant....he doesn't need the read option to run.

Yes, because High School and College schemes have such long life expectancies in the NFL. The Read Option is a gimmick. Get over it. Shanahan compared The Pistol to a college dual enrollment course.

Where did I say Cam won't be running in 2013? Every QB runs occasionally. I suggest you visit a community college or learning annex and take up ENG 101. Your reading comprehension is abysmal.

You're right. Gettleman inherited Cam and Rivera, but Ron won't be coming back next season if the Panthers don't reach the playoffs. Neither will Shula and McDermott. Therefore, who he hires next will indeed impact Cam and the offense. You can kiss the Read Option goodbye if that's the case. That's the power of his influence as a general manager.

Ugh...

What goes on in college does slowly bleed over to the NFL....we are seeing another wave of it now. That is just a fact. The spread offense is a prime example. We are know seeing another wave as athletes are playing QB instead of converting of other positions.

Read option isn't a gimmick....it isn't an offense like so many say. Chud and Shanahan weren't running read option offenses....they where running their same old poo they always did using the read option incorporated in. It is just a variation of play action used in the NFL.....play action isn't a gimmick. Read option isn't....gimmicks show up for a year. Read option has become a flat out staple in college football.....and you just 3 NFL postseason teams use it. That ain't the wildcat. Read option will go when athletes quit playing QB...

If Ron is gone the read probably will too.....new coach in NFL history means new QB within 2 years generally unless that coach inherited a Superbowl QB. Personally I want Ron to succeed bc I want Cam to be here and for him to reach his full potential.....Cam only reaches his max potential with a coach that uses all his talent

Ugh...

So because a variant of the Spread Offense is still breathing in the NFL, you assume the Read Option will? Fantastic deduction... except The Spread Offense is a variant of The Single Wing Offense (which, incidentally, was considered the future and/or evolution of football until it too was exposed). Once more, try again.

Hey, I'm fine with a variant of The Read Option as long as it's not utilized as a base for the offense. Chud's system and playcalling was one of top reasons why Cam struggled in 2012. It won't help Cam either in 2013 if Shula follows in Chud's footsteps (neglects the RBs; predictable playcalling). Defenses are gonna be lining up to hit Cam on every play as if he were a piñata. We saw that transpire at the Superbowl with Kaepernick.

Newton will reach his full potential when he develops a short game, fixes his footwork and amps his checkdowns.

You said college offenses don't transition to the NFL and last....which was false. So I responded why it was false.

Again, the read option isn't a gimmick....it is the result of who is now playing QB. Simple. It is simply finally making its way up the ladder. Unless the athletes quit playing QB and the NFL goes back to smash mouth football....read option will be here for sometime.

Carolina struggled bc our OL was hot garbage....

49ers got to he the Superbowl bc Atl overplayed the QB....huge key runs late bc of it. Half the NFC postseason teams ran it. Half the NFC postseason teams ran the read option and got the postseason with rookie or 2nd year QBs. Those examples work against you....not in your favor.

Read option isn't an offense. So what are you even talking about then? It is just something added to an existing scheme.

Yes, Newton reaches his max potential when he uses both his arm AND legs.

No, bc no one outside Carolina cares about who is competing for the # 3 or 4 WR spot here this time of year.

Hey lets talk about the 4th string WR in Kansas City....we care about that right?

Nobody asked him to write a Pulitzer Prize article on Dominick Hixon.

A panther fan obviously cared enough to ask him on twitter and instead the sportswriter of the year chose to make a snide, condescending remark. In my opinion it was a shot at Cam.

he's just a dickhead, he's taken a lot of heat from panthers fans and is apparently vindictive.

Hixon isn't some landmark, amazing signing, but he could have easily just ignored the comment if he really didn't think it was worth commenting on. He took the time to be an asshole though, which tells you more about Peter King than it does about anything else.

How is it false when college systems tend to fade away at the Pro Level? The Spread appears to be the exception at the moment but so was The Single Wing. Remind me again, how long was it relevant? 2-3 years? Maybe 4? How many current NFL teams have applied the Spread into their offenses?

The Read Option is a gimmick. Whether you want to accept that or not, that's on you. Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. Vick and RG3 are prime examples. Shanahan has already stated that he's moving on and Harbaugh is hinting on doing the same. If you lose your franchise QB to injuries then the season is over.

The OL was only part of the problem. If you have trouble seeing what caused our implosion, may I suggest you review the season with a microscope?

The 49ers got to the Superbowl because of their defense and the Redskins overpowered a division that featured the hangover Giants, a crappy Eagles team and a Romo-led Cowboys. Those examples don't work in your favor either. Kaepernick was completely shutdown multiple times in the post season, and after first two drives by RG3, he as well, was kept out of the redzone.

Again, you said it didn't happen....which was false. The spread is a recent example. Go ask Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers about running the spread in the NFL....

Read option isn't a gimmick. It has become a staple in high school and college for years and years now....and is finally trickling up.

OL....and a CB and S that shouldn't of been on the field is why we struggled overall.

Common sense applies....you can't ask Peyton to go play action on every pass or it begins to hurt his offense. Chud called it to often in plays early.

RGIII is a twig with an injury issue....running him like Cam is just dumb. Not a read option debate
