Inconvenient Truth GM Edition(Hurney vs Gettleman)

The main difference is that you see bargin free agents that come in with at least one or two great skills that are relevant to their position at a relevant cost. Ginn would have been signed for 3 million under Hurnery's pattern.

Ginn, far from perfect is elite speed and top 5 returner.

DJ Moore is a ball hawk and can offer great depth in zone cvg.

SS Mitchell has good speed size and hits well with actual film of his play..he is caught behind Tyvon Branch. Nakamura was a warm body who got quite a contract actually..crazy.

Needs are being met not signings of HBs at premium prices, Kickers like Mare getting a premium contract, Nakamura who you could just scout in his Madden attributes to know he offered very little(joke)

I will reserve a grade till I see a whole offseason but so far the trend is good.

Excellent post. I guess one place where I differ from the masses is Hurney get's a huge pass on the 2009-11 free agency period from me becuase of JR. (He's still to blame for the Everette Brown,Armanti Edwards, Terrell Mcclain, and Clausen picks).

lol you're comparing Munnerlyn's new contract as an UFA to his rookie 7th round contract hahahaha ohhh I just... I can't

No every other player that Hurney signed as a free agent, that Gettleman re-signed.Contract values are the same.

I get it, you don't like my opinion on the matter. Thats fine. Bring some good research without stretching the truth or digging for some hole for a quick one liner to tell me how what I have said is so wrong?

I wanted to hear opposing views, hence the point of the thread. Granted you seem more interested in trying to land clever one liners for reasons unknown(some would suspect an appetitie for pie) vs discussing football.

Are you really comparing Hurney to a top tier in-house evaluator and tape guru who has six trips to the Superbowl and three Lombardi trophies under his belt with off-season moves? Holy ****.

Get back to me when Gettleman has actual room to work with. This is a poorly constructed argument if I ever saw one. Yes, Hurney signed Dwan, Nakamura and Tolbert but he also placed us in Cap hell (outrageous contracts) and drafted duds beyond the first round.

Its not an argument. It's me voicing my opinion on seeing several remarks exaggerating the genius of the moves that Gettleman has made thus far and the blind hate for Hurney becomes it seems like the cool thing to do. Who gives a fug about him now that he's gone, before this thread you rarely see me mention his name anymore.

I just wanted to have a conversation about it but I do blame myself somewhat for not knowing how to tactfully state that I disagree with others opinions on here without coming off as arrogant or what have you. I at least give in depth reasoning behind my thought's and basically that's all I want for others who care to participate in this thread.

Lol

Everything in a three year span of offseasons was JR's fault

Oh and Gettleman can't differentiate himself from Hurney to me even though he inherited a team 16 million over the cap

Funny how the so-called "inconvenient truth" is a pretty convenient perspective for Hurney homers

I agree with you on this..we are still recovering from 10-11 where if that did not happen the extensions and such would have been better spread out.

It probably even hindered/restricted the 09 focus as well which is when Hurney started to go pick trade crazy bc he probably only got permission to use the Draft to help the roster.

Add Corvey Irvin to that list..

I was too a Hurney apologist as I would have resigned the same players minus the Godfrey, James Anderson contracts. but again bc of the 10-11 seasons I think the only way Hurney could sign guys was to overpay and overestimate market value..it really did him a disservice.

Addressing need positions with 7th round picks in trades was a fatal flaw. He signed guys from nowhere where as Gettleman is signing guys with some measurable success and game film.

Chase Blackburn is better than James Anderson IMO and 5 times the lber Dan Conner was. He has a plan in case TD (who is still a major inj risk) or Beason go down. Also huge competition in the Cb position is nice.

We had too many mediocre players have guaranteed jobs bc no one was better.

Hurney had his shot man. This is Gettleman's first run and he brings a lot of excitement to the franchise. He doesn't have that much to work with and most of us know that. Of course Hurney would have have also been cheap, we had nothing to spend.

His Value on every free agent we re-signed this year is the same value Hurney put on them. Look it up.(same contract values or less when Hurney was here).

The other teams outside free agents, I have high hopes for because Gettleman's resume speaks for itself in terms of experience and being a part of highly successful teams. However is it not just a tad premature at this point to say he's done a masterful job on players that have never even been to a mini camp with us yet?

A masterful job of the cap, the way he resigned our own and restructured, and the veteran presences he has signed in our secondary. We were sixteen million dollars over the cap, he has done an amazing job thus far. You need to look at the entire scope of the offseason and not just the signings themselves.

From what I've observed most huddlers are cautiously optimistic regarding Gettleman. Why does it have to be one extreme or the other as you describe it? I appreciate you taking the time to post all that, but it just isn't necessary. How about we atleast let the guy complete the draft first before comparing him to Hurney...

I'm actually surprised someone still has the nerve after all of this to still be creating an epic appeal for Hurney

Actually I'm not surprised because on this forum nobody ever admits they were wrong they just try to slide their argument in by a different angle

for the 2011 contract debacles, i hold Hurney at fault along with JR. i'm sure JR told Hurney to do what it took to keep those players, but as has been mentioned already Hurney overvalued the players and spent more than was needed. remember, even CJ said he was shocked at what he was offered which says to me we didn't need to offer that much

I really should have just said its too early to judge Gettleman yet but so far so good. My bad for tying to be in depth.

I understand the point of this thread. And you will get people who give one liners, because most either don't like to engage in these conversations or are two lazy to type out how they really feel about it.

The dude inherited a complete mess. You can blame that on the owner, the GM or both. Most blame it on the GM. So when Gettleman comes in here and doesn't bullshit around. Gives an offer, the player decides to test the market, and then comes back and Gettleman offers basically HALF of what he had originally offered. That is what gets me excited. Moves like that. The Anderson move, the Blackburn signing.

I never saw Hurney make moves like this before. The mammoth CJ contract (i'm actually fine with this but it's still a lot), the Anderson contract, the Beason Contract (he had a known achilles problem), the D-Low and Stewart contracts. These were fiscally irresponsible and hindered other areas of our team from progressing.

If Gettleman proves through this draft that he is the great talent evaluator, which i believe him to be, it will just be icing on the cake in this discussion.
