Gettlemen recognized for his bargain basement shopping

New general manager Dave Gettleman inherited a mess from the previous Panthers regime. But after cutting some veterans and restructuring the contracts of others, Gettleman forged enough salary-cap space to augment his roster with modest free-agent pickups like wide receiver/returner Ted Ginn Jr. (San Francisco), middle linebacker Chase Blackburn (New York Giants), and three defensive backs in Drayton Florence (Detroit), D.J. Moore (Chicago) and Michael Mitchell (Oakland). Gettleman also was able to keep two of his better defensive players — lineman Dwan Edwards and cornerback Captain Munnerlyn — in the fold with new deals.

This is not news, but it puts the past few weeks into perspective. When have we had a better free agency period? Remember, we were $16 million over the cap. Gettlemen will be even more amazing when he gets the Marty Hurney idiocy off the books. I bet his office still smells like Hurney. Febreeze it Gettlemen!

Serioulsy, Gettlemen is not only providing competion and depth at weak positions, but he is making our special teams dangerous. Mitchell is a headhunter, Ginn a top returner, Moore a versatile special teamer, and Blackburn is a fiery leader who may become the ST captain.

People looking from the outside in probably see that we didn't get a huge FA and automatically assume we failed. They don't realize that this was probably close to the best possible outcome for us. Now that we've seen what Gettleman can do in TERRIBLE circumstances, I'm excited about the time when he has more room for moves/changes.

I'm not going to judge Gettlemen this year due to the situation that fugtard Hurney left, but people have been saying look at the special team pickup for years. When I see I good special teams, then I will say wow.

That's true, we picked up, like, 19 "special team aces" the past two years. Hopefully some of these guys can be decent contributors on plays from scrimage as that seems to be more of a concrete impact.

I agree. However, aside from kicker and punter and returners, our special teams have been great if you don't put too much stock in tackling and blocking.

Seriously, you do not get better at them by doing nothing. At least this is a start.

I don't know what happened to special teams but it seems like it started around the Chris Gamble lateral. And I'm glad we are making moves on them because they hurt us bad. But at this point, good special teams play is just something I am going to have to see to believe. We could bring get the a time machine and get the entire 2011 49ers unit, and I wouldn't believe they would play well till I saw it.

I am with you, but we got a little better at the end. I am curious that P and K has not been addressed--I think last season should at least create competition.

Remember when we had Jared Cooper, Bates, Hankins, etc? Glory days in ST land. Who was out special teams captain? I think we need to get back to one. (Blackburn is my choice).

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
    • I don't think there is much of a chance we go wr in the first round.  If Young continues to play fairly well, our choice will likely dl, lb, or maybe a slight chance at ol.
