McShay 2 Round Mock

Every mock last year had Carolina taking Fletcher Cox or Quinton Coples. This year every one says Richardson. When have these things ever been right?

for years people had us taking a TE early. when we picked cam, most had us taking a DT or something.

they are very rarely right. usually the more consensus there is about who we are going to pick, the more wrong they are.

here's the thing about richardson...we haven't met with him, at least not yet. from what i can tell we've only met with a couple DTs. mostly it's been WRs. if we haven't met with the guy before the draft, you can pretty much bank on him not being the pick.

Maybe but who knows how Gettleman runs a draft. Maybe he's all smokescreeens. Wouldn't be the first time teams have meet with a bunch of guys they have no intention of picking just to make sure a guy they do want drops.

This draft has a number of good quality players around both our 1st and 2nd round pick. They also happen to be players that are a need for us. DT, CB, WR.

I wonder what Gettleman's draft philosophy will be. Does he reach for a player of need? How likely is he to trade up or down in a draft? Etc.

Its usually BPA and obvious need = DT or TE( in the Fox days).

They are not predictions of the certain future just a tool to see who will be availibe in a logical need scheme standpoint. The best miss more than hit so relax..

Slyvester Williams was remocked to us on NFP's draft.

Stated that Williams has not been famous on early mocks but is high on quite a few draft boards.

After the LSU pro Days Vaccaro is now falling making way to Crypien and Eric Reid(who blew scouts away)

Russ Lande's top 200 board(yes he has Ryan Nassib as the top guy-must be his nephew)

lot's of questions, for sure, but i do think the one thing that isn't one is about us drafting someone in the first round we haven't met with. i just don't see it happening.

first two rounds are more than likely going to be some combo of DL or WR...maybe secondary.

I'm torn, while I'd like to get another 3 tech to play with Dwan, I'd also like to go ahead and fill the NT need since it's an immediate concern.

I haven't watched a lot of Richardson, but most of what I've heard from the talking heads is very good. If I'm not mistaken, Warren Sapp was listed as an explosive 3 tech who needed a lot of work against the run.

Same here. I like Richardson but I'm not in love with him. On the other hand I've asked Star Lotulelei to marry me but I don't think he'll drop that far.

Is he worth going up a few spots to get if he starts to drop. If the Panthers didn't have so many needs I'd say yes and sadly it'd probably take a lot more than an extra 4th to move up 2 or 3 spots.

A lot of reports are comparing him to Ngata of the Ravens and imagine our D-line with a monster like that on the inside.

holy crap i don't want us moving up in the first for anyone.

move back or not at all.

no more mortgaging the future, please. we need more picks, not less.

Richardson wouldn't really play much year one I don't think, pretty sure that Dwan would be starting so why draft a 3 tech that's not going to see a bunch of playing time????? Yes, Richardson with his size is a 3 tech only. The big team weakness at DT is with NT, not UT. Stupid pick. If your going to mock a DT to the Panther's at least pick the right damn kind that fits the teams needs.

Don't mind Hunter in the second round at all, good pick.

He also had 75 tackles leading his team which is unheard of for a DT. Plus got to the backfield constantly against the best Olines in the the country. If they kept QB pressures as a stat in college like they do in the pro's he would lead all DT in that.

Didn't see him get that much pressure, he's so overrated. Gets a lot of tackles down field cuz he gets pushed back and has the speed to catch them, doesn't mean he's good against the run

Then you haven't been watching film on him. Dude is always in the backfield.

We really don't know if we've met with him or not. In fact, I'd almost bet that we at least talked to him at the combine and had a reresentative at his pro day. Not all meetings get out...usually depends on the agent, and I haven't heard much from Richardson's. Also, if you remember, Beason said that prior to being drafted by us, he had heard barely a word from the Panthers and had no idea they had any interest. Of course that was a different regime, but just points out that teams can often make draft decisions based on tape, scouting reports, and reasearch without much direct contact.

I don't know if we'll take Richardson if he's available, but it wouldn't be a bad choice as some would have us believe. Sure we need a NT, but Edwards is only on a two year deal (and the team really only wants him for one) and is getting up there in age. At some point we need to find our long-term solution at UT (which is vital to the attacking defense we want to employ), and if the team feels Richardson is that guy, then bring him in and get him ready to take over full time next year. Sometimes it's about planning for the future rather than instant gratification (well, unless you're Rivera, I guess).

That would give him time to transition properly (in other words, not being rushed before his time), impove his upper body strength (which is the reason most analysts say he occasionally struggles when teams run directly at him--key word, occasionally, not always), and improve his technique. The thing that stands out to me is that most report that he is extremely quick off the snap, is excellent in pursuit, is great at diagnosing the play (in fact, I read one place where they compared him to Kuechly in this regard), and has a non-stop motor. On Path to the Draft, they were talking about how Richardson makes so many plays downfield, and they were raving that it was not because of any flaw, but that he is such a great athlete and is always hustling to wherever the ball is. So I would be very satisfied if we take him, but also won't cry if we choose to go in another direction.
