Which is pretty much why I think we are done dealing until after the draft. Then fill whatever holes we have left with FA.

Maybe or maybe not. They did bring in K Winslow and Booth, I think they have their eyes on another TE and OG

I think what we are forgetting is, at this point in the season. Only the top 51 amounts paid out affect our cap number. this simply means that anyone signed under a million most likely is not going to get added to our cap number. It is not a combined total salary. If it were total combined salary, how could we bring 70+ players into training camp and be under a cap limit?

Lets theoretically say that the 51st largest cap number on our team right now is 1.0 million dollars and we sign a player whose cap hit is going to be 1.2 million. The 1.2 million would take the place of the 1.0 million and only raise our cap figure by 0.2 million dollars.

OT: I'm assuming you meant Colin Cole here, not Jones, not really a big deal but it had me confused for a bit.

I covered this in another cap-related thread (I think about One-Year Deals in particular), how some of these one-year deals have smaller cap hits via the Veteran Minimum Salary Benefit, and thus save even more space for us. I won't repeat all of that again, but from what I can tell the cap hits from the above contracts isn't the same as what they're being paid due to the structure of the deals. Basically these one-year minimum deals allow us to reduce their cap number to $555,000 plus whatever bonuses they get.

According to spotrac, for some of these guys you have the cap hit, not the salary, and vice-versa. But, for example, according to sportrac we're paying Florence the vet min ($940,000 for him) + a signing bonus of $65,000, to bring him a payday of just over $1mil. However, by signing him to this type of deal, his base salary for cap reasons is reduced from $940k to $555k, and then the signing bonus ($65k) is added, thus bringing his cap hit to $620k.

Hartsock is also making more, but the $620k is his cap hit. Moore's salary is consistent with what spotrac has, but his official cap hit should also be $555k since none of it is a bonus. I'm not sure if Captain's hit will also be reduced though, since he has a workout bonus as well.

I'm not sure I completely understand this stuff though, for instance it looks like we gave Captain $35,000 too much to be able to reduce his cap number. Why not just add that in as bonus? I mean, it's a one-year deal anyway. I suppose if he doesn't make the team or something you'd lose less guaranteed money this way, but otherwise we could've saved (an admittedly meager) $160k in cap space.

Spot on post. I did mean Colin Cole and posted their cap hit only, thanks for the corrections.

i don't think we're done yet. they'll try and address every hole or deficiency before the draft the same way they've been doing. they'll hit at least OL, and maybe even add in a WR/pass catching TE.

the goal from what i'm gathering is to set themselves up with as few holes as possible heading into the draft so they can just focus on picking up the best player and the pressure is off to start them right away.

You could be right. There is different things that can happen to free up some more money. If they want to bring in some more FA before the draft they probably could. Cheap FA won;t affect the cap. How many more of those type players do we need? OL, DT, maybe even a TE. So if they are willing to throw cap moving money at some guy. He'd better start and do it well.

I just had a thought that maybe they might want to see who they draft before they fill in any more holes. We need OL help and they are quiet in that area. We need DT help and we are taking our time with that as well.

I guess I am just trying to justiify the lull in activity at the moment. We haven't really done much. But it seems to me, under the circumstances, we are at least trying to add depth and competition. At positions of need to boot. Which is always a good thing.

Too many questions for me? You get a cheap RG in FA and some 4th round Womack clone beats him out. You have created depth. Or the other way around. Where your FA beats lil womack to the depth chart. Either way we win.

IMO, at this time in the NFL, you fill out your needs with cheap one year guys. It allows you to ease your BPA into the lineup as he progresses. Keep the stress low and let the kid play.

tl/dr version. Stll am antsy over the lull in FA. I guess it doesn't matter when you fill your roster using one year deals. Before, or, after the draft. Because Gettlemen is taking his BPA regardless of roster needs. But you have to have a full roster before the season starts You have to be able to keep the rookies out of the line of fire.

Damm I love tangents.

so if these cheap signings wont affect the cap does that mean we could still sign a player for something like 2 year 6 mil. or something like that?

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap-hit/

Short answer, no.

That website has a line thru the non top 51 cap hits. Looks like $555,000.

We have several players only making 555k and some those will drop into the less than top 51 salaries once they formally put the salaries of Dwan, Mitchell and Ginn Jr. up.

Without them updating those last 3 cap hits you'll see that the 52nd highest cap hit is $529,750 (this and the ones less than it don't count..I know captain obvious just trying to be clear).

i'm not sure, but i think that dead money counts against that as well, so guys like gamble, mare, wharton, and edwards all count towards that 51.

Yes it does. As well as any signing bonus proration for any others besides the 51.

Yea it does, dead money counts towards that as well.

I was just figuring this up, I know he probably won't get it.

However if Thomas Davis hits his escalators again plus gets his two option bonuses of 2.5 and 5 million in 2014 and 2015, his salary cap hit in 2015 will be like 17 million. With around 9 of that in Bonus money. LMAO.

hurney would've given every penny of that cap room to munnerlyn. gettleman pays bitches what they're worth and not a penny more.

this roster is only going to continue to improve.

gettleman knows you don't pay above market value.

hurney obviously didn't agree with that mindset. too concerned with protecting our "core" and not letting go of good players, even if they can be easily, cheaply and/or adequately replaced. every contract he wrote after the lockout was way above market value.
