Gettleman wasn't the first guy to come up with signing guys for 1yr. Almost 90% of the contracts handed to FAs this offseason were 1yr deals. People don't give out big contracts anymore.

It all started with Jim Harbaugh and SF signing Vet CB Carlos Rogers with two consecutive 1yr deals. That's the new market for vets today. You gotta earn your pay check one year at a time. Teams are trying to avoid a Albert Haynesworth signing.

It has nothing to do with Rivera or JR. That's just the new market price. And a good one.

A one year deal right now makes the most sense for a number of reasons:

1. Next years salary cap might be in worse shape than 2013's cap for us. Signing players to 1 year deals allows us to pick and choose next year who will be worth the further investment

2. We are not taking chances on having any more "dead money" accured on our books. The fact that we are still paying players who are no longer on the team. I remember a point in 2010 when Hurney had $30 million tied up in “dead money’’.

I think you are right about limiting dead money and worrying about the cap next year. Things will be tight this year and next as we dump bad contracts and fix the cap. Add that Gettleman said he was the master of 1 year contracts and used them in New York to fill gaps with vets willing to use them as a way to stick around or prove themselves in hopes of a bigger contract down the road.

Our coach is on a one year deal. Let's give him his opportunity and then clean house if needed.

Not only are they the norm but I believe with all these 1 year deals Gettleman is able to clean out the mess he inherited. Within a couple years he will have complete control. No need in adding to deals that might come back to haunt him.
