First Draft Podcast-Kiper/McShay Discuss picks 11-15

IMO we need more then just Dwan coming back. And I'm willing to bet 1 of our 1st 2 picks will be a DB.

at this point i'd still do corner in 1st and DL in 2nd. Can get a solid guard later, but then again the only FA we haven't signed is OL and DT. Gettleman is filling needs with one year deals to skate by, but none of them are going to be good enough.

If they are so easy to replace them why haven't we done it yet? You're not crazy enough to believe we have their replacements on the roster now do you?

And the fact you think it was 1 or 2 games makes me think you didn't watch this team all year.

We got killed in the Philly, KC, Giants, Atl, Denver, and both Tampa games by the run. We forced other teams to pass by building leads in the Seattle, Chicago, Redskins and both NO games. That doesn't mean we were playing the run well.

But I love how you're trying to sit here and devalue the DT position when 5 or 6 might go in the 1st round.

We didn't lose to ATL because of our run defense.

NYG and Denver obliterated us in all phases of the game, pinning it just on running isn't fair. We couldn't move the ball, stop either Manning, played horribly on special teams AND we couldn't stop the run.

No we don't have their replacements on the roster, but we'll acquire them the same way. I'm not saying we don't need DT help but picking a DT at 14 just isn't worth it. In the past 3-4 drafts what first round DTs outside of the sure fire guys (Suh, Darius, McCoy, etc) have panned out? Simply put all the first round guys who don't have it ALL are project players and take a few years to develop. We need stop gap solutions for just a few downs.

Even if we do pick a great DT in the first and he's as good as Cam and Luke have been, how do we plan on paying him with Cam, Luke and Hardy's contracts coming up? DT is a very important position and it HAS to be addressed in FA or the draft, I just don't think going after a superstar one is a luxury we can afford.

The more and more I hear about Austin, the more I think that a lot of teams are gonna hate that they passed on the guy. The way these guys are talking about him, his explosiveness and versatility would literally supercharge our already explosive, if not underestimated, offensive machine. These professionals speak of him as an extraordinary talent regardless if he is a slot receiver or not. I prefer a true WR1, but if Austin is on that D-Jax or Cruz level where it's difficult to tell, then I would strongly have to consider drafting him. We can always find a more prototypical WR1 in next year's draft or perhaps even FA next year. Hell, Danario Alexander is still out there for seemingly cheap this year,

1. The 1st ATL game wouldn't have been close if we didn't give up 103 yards on 13carries to Turner. Not to mention they got 6.5 yards per carry. Do you think that really didn't have a effect?

2. First you can say the same thing about every position.

2009 BJ Raji and Ziggy Hood are starters.

2010 you name the 2 but Tyson Alualu and Dan Williams have been solid and Odrick is a beast in the 3-4.

2011 Phil Taylor was dominate for the Browns. Muhammad Wilkerson very good for the Jets. Corey Liuget has been solid for the Chargers.

2012 Flecther Cox was solid and Michael Brockers was good for the Rams.

Since 2009 16 DT have been drafted in the 1st round (so somebody thinks the position is important) and only Peria Jerry is a flat out bust. Nick Fairley and Dontari Poe are still question marks and the rest have been either solid or very good.

3. We need to stop with this bandaid mentality with one of the most important position on the field. Stop trying to get stop gaps year after year. When we were truely a great defense guess what we had? Jenkins and Buckner in the middle. It's stupid not to take advantage of 1 of the deepest DT drafts in a decade.

4. Well dude hopefully Gettelman will get us out of this habit of paying RB's and LB so we can pay to have a good DLine. Plus there are teams that have a Good QB MLB DT combo they pay for. Patriots, Ravens, Giants and Steelers have been doing it for years.

DT is a important position that has to be address in FA and the draft. Is what you need to say.

Top Dawg: Agreed. And thanks for the Pie..6 pages of fun draft conversation and an entertaining link and 2 pie given..geesh..stingy Huddle.

To get a guy who has rare speed and playmaking ability you probally gotta go get him. I listened to the podcast again at work and to listen to them kinda off the cuff rave about Austin..was like wow. No other player got that kind of love except for Dion Jordan..in an earlier podcast.

You can always get a Red Zone Guy in Daniario(who is just beloved by the Huddle) or a Ramses Barden.

However I have a good feeling with the signings so far.. The team is a little more dynamic on special teams.

I do think that Ginns signing may be a sign that the Panthers are looking more at an Allen or Hopkins, Patton at WR. Austin may have been viewed as a ST/WR like D Jax.

smitty, Lafell, Austin, Ginn, Olsen would be tough formation to stop with all the speed and potential screen plays.

Not necessarily for the Panthers, but I'm surprised there's not more buzz around Datone Jones. He's that DT/DE who can go 3-tech. If he can become a little more consistent he could be a great versatile d-lineman. 6'4 283...I hope ATL doesn't get him and someone earlier on bites.

For us, I'm pretty open to the possibilities...

WR - Hopkins, Allen, Austin

DT - Star, Richardson

OT - Johnson

(If we don't get Boothe or someone) OG - Cooper, Warmack

I'd be cool with any of these guys at this point if the team we have right now is what we have on draft day.
