Probably not beating down the door, but we have a much better shot than guys picking in the top 10. This will be a good draft, there just aren't many studs in the top 10.

Wishful thinking. We talk about this possibility like every year, never happens. I won't hold my breath.

We won't take a DT in the first (at least at pick #14) and here is why:

-1st round DTs that aren't top 5 can't miss guys (Suh, McCoy, Darius) have absurdly high bust rates.

-We have Ron Rivera and Gettleman, both of which are very good at digging through other team's trash and finding capable guys for cheap. We will get a guy or two late in FA or after pre-season cuts, and they will surprise us.

-Young super talented DT does not fit into our future. We are going to be investing huge money into Keek, Hardy and CJ for the next decade.

-It's not as big a need as we think it is. Dwan will NEVER repeat his 6 sack season, he got that from teams overplanning for our DE combo. Also you need to remember on passing downs we usually bring Hardy inside. All we need is a guy for running downs to control his gap.

We didn't stop the run all year so I don't agree with DT not being a big need. Most good defenses are strong up the middle. That's DT, MLB, and Safety. Look at the top defenses in league and you will mostly see the same pattern. If we want to be a top defense it starts from the DT position.

Not really...

SF, Denver, Pitt, Houston, SD, NYJ, GB... all top ranked defenses with very good front 7's, but aren't particularly known for superstar DT play. (However Cinci, Seattle and Chicago are)

Also we finished 14th in run defense, not shabby at all allowing an average 4.2 YPC.

In today's NFL a dynamite pass rush is significantly more important than run stopping capabilities.

We are not a big Slot WR using team. Special with Shula as the OC. We will be moving towards a more traditional offense. Which mean more 2 back sets and less 3 wr sets.

I don't understand what makes you think that? You have no inside information do you? I know how Shula has been in the past but the reason he is our OC now is because he knows Chuds offense and agreed to keep doing about the same thing. Especially when you have Cam. Austin is a guy that you just get the ball too and he just makes everyone miss and blows past everybody. Any team could use that.

^^

What this guy said? Just because we are going to be more traditional than Chud (which basically means, ANY offense in the NFL) doesn't have any weight on the personnel we use. We very well could simply go from having 80% of our snaps in the shotgun to having only 50% of our snaps being in the shotgun.

Talk of trading down was pretty common both years. The huddle isn't exactly full of geniuses.

Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't against it either.

All I'm saying is that if we land players of Cam and Luke's calibre, then we definitely are making the right decision by not trading down.

SF - Justin Smith really?? You don't think he's good?

GB- BJ Raji

Pitt- Hampton has been great for years.

Houston- Watts plays all the DLine position and he is great.

SD - When SD was good on defense they had AG up front. When he is hurt not as good.

NYJ - Pohua is a beast and when they were really good Jenkins was in the middle.

You are also picking a lot of 3-4 teams. Look at the the really good 4-3 defenses.

We finished 14 because our offense started scoring more points making teams pass more. But we got gashed by PHilly and a undrafted RB KC and Tampa going down the stretch. Giving up 4.2 a carry isn't good.

We all know that from the comments of the HC the GM and Shula's history we are going to move to a traditional offense. Meaning we will still run the ball a good % out of traditional running sets. How is Austin as a blocker in you opinion because we will be running the ball at least 50% to 45% of the time.

All I'm saying it's not a great scheme fit for Austin with the direction this team is going on offense. If we were running a Patriot type offense or a West coast type offense I would be all for Auatin . If we were going to pass the Ball 70% to 75% of the time I would be all for Austin. But with the comments from the FO and the money in the backfield I don't see that.
