Ron Rivera reportedly says the Panthers are "open to trading D. Will"

So what would we get in return besides some cap space down the road... a 5th round pick?

No thanks, I would only do this trade if it involved a player that could help us now at a position of need.

I agree. Considering how plug and play the RB position is now and what players are going for in trades, a 5th rounder would be pretty damn kind for an aging back with that contract.

It's going to be a 9.6 million dollar hit whether we trade him or keep him. Even if we do either as "post June 1st," I am not in favor of carrying over dead money into the future. If we do it as an immediate hit then we lose 1.4 in cap space(his current hit is 8.2 million).

So basically no reason to move him this year. Its has been discussed ad nauseam on here but poster's refuse to acknowledge it for some damn reason.

And while I'm at it here one more inconvenient truth for the majority of the Huddle. Cutting Clausen only saves 55k this year, unless of course done as a June 1st cut and carrying over dead money into 2014.

he is counting towards $8.2 this year, but I agree, there isn't much point in moving him until next season unless someone offers us something for him, which i highly doubt would happen. i'm not exactly sure how the june 1st cuts divvy up the dead money whether it is split in half or whatever, i kinda hate the biness side of futbol.

Some of you may not think this matters but if we cut him today or after june 1st or trade him or what have you it turns his deal into a 2 year/26 million dollar deal. JR/ his investors are not biting that bullet. Thats far worse than 5 yr/ 43 million its scheduled to be.

For those who question that math it's easy. He got a 16 million dollar signing bonus and received the day he signed the deal.

The other 10 million is from his 11 base salary of 4.5 million and his 12 base salary of 5.25 million plus his 250k workout bonus.

He's not going to be with the team in the long run under that contract regardless. Its about more than just 1 year.

There's no "biting the bullet" though, all of that has already been paid. Yeah he's taking up cap space, but if we cut or trade him at all this offseason then JR won't owe DWill a dime.

whether he got that 16 the day he signed or if it is spread out over the duration of the contract, it counts evenly thru the five years. At minimum, the Panthers are responsible for 9.6 million against our cap, which is 1.4 more than he counts against the cap this year alone. Cutting him this year unless it is a June 1st cut is losing money for nothing. He has one more season with this team and that much is almost guaranteed, which isn't a bad thing going forward.
