They need to stand their ground and not give it to him. One year of true production. I know a lot of people are going to say, "same applied to Charles Johnson," but people forget Johnson actually played very well in 2008 (one of the leagues most efficient pass rushers that season) and looked solid in 2009 prior to getting hurt. Hardy had looked solid as well, but we still have Johnson on the other side. Keep him for this season and if possible, I guess you could look into tagging him next year OR if it is clear 2012 was no fluke (which I don't think it is, but you can't rule it out with D-Lineman), extend him midway through 2013 and don't wait until the end because then you might have to pay even more cash.

Or, try to trade him if Alexander continues to progress.

Greg Hardy - DL - Panthers

Panthers RE Greg Hardy is seeking a contract extension heading into the final year of his rookie deal.

The timing is right for Hardy in that he's coming off a breakout season, but wrong in that the Panthers have little room to maneuver and defensive ends are settling for below-market deals all over the league. Hardy is currently due just $1.35 million in his walk year, so it's not as if the Panthers can dramatically lower his cap number in the form of an extension. We wouldn't expect an agreement any time soon.

And rightfully so all greg has done was come into the league learned how to play in the pros and tore it up, so if he goes to another team dont be mad at him its jr and Marty's fault greg has earned it but i hope some how we can find a way to keep him.

Hardy has to be aware of 2 things.

One, Hurney aint the GM anymore and he's not getting a CJ type contract.

Two, the only people getting paid in the NFL these days are QBs.

How well he understands this will determine if he's a Panther in 2014.

Now's the perfect time to resign him if we can. The DE market has been depressed this year, and with only 1 very good year we'll be able to resign him for a lot cheaper in the long run than if we wait til next year. Trade him?! Jesus H Christ. I'd argue he was possibly the most important player on our defense last year. The only way that makes any sense is if he's asking for a Hurney deal, and there's been no evidence of that yet. If the coaches and staff believe last year was not an anomaly, and they would obviously know better than us, now would definitely be the best time to give him an extension.

The absolute most he could possibly be asking for is in the vicinity of Cliff Avril's $7.5mil a year contract, but with a longer contract we should probably be able to get him for a little less per year and have more room to make it cap friendly. I wouldn't be surprised if we could get him for $5 - 6 mil per year at this point, whereas the market could be higher next year and if he has another very good year that number could balloon to around $10 mil a year after next season.

You really need to talk with him and find out where things are, you don't want to just let him hit free agency and see what happens.

agreed...except there just isn't the money to do it.

unless something major happens soon, that's not going to change.

this would be the ideal time to do it and all the rest of the extensions if it weren't for the fact that after hurney got us a ton of cap room, he blew his load on just a few overpaid extensions without consulting the incoming HC to see if it would work with his game plan.

we are behind the 8 ball and the only recourse we have is to cut player who make to much and not sign anymore big extensions.

we have to do both of these things to keep us from fighting yearly to keep our heads above water.

players due for new contracts, unless they are going to be very moderately priced and below market value, need to be avoided and passed on.

all growth for the foreseeable future has to be either draft picks or cheap players on one or two year deals. we can't afford to pay anyone more than vet minimums or money within the rookie cap. we can't afford to commit ourselves to any deals that will tie us up for the next 3 years. we have to save room for cam and essentially rebuild the team.

can we even afford that and pay CJ? where we going to get money to pay other guys at other positions? significant cuts need to be made for even contracts like that to happen.

All I know is that gettleman comes from an organization that is pretty good at placing a proper value on players, which I've said before.

can you imagine what it would look like if hardy had actually been voted into the pro-bowl?

we have a chance of this being a modest extension, but if he had been voted to the pro-bowl there's no way that we would be looking at anything close to reasonable in contract demands...which is a lot of the reason that i absolutely hate the pro-bowl. it does nothing concrete to benefit a team. it can only cause problems for contract negotiations.
