Hardy and Lafell

Our DEs are whats gonna make our defense respectable the next couple of years. Having Luke at LB is just icing on the cake. We could have a elite defense very quick. Gettleman just has to build around them smartly but not take too long, i will be astonished if he screws that up.

NY model is to keep drafting DEs....building through the draft doesn't mean paying your draft picks big deals once they mature/peak.

Exactly. Draft well, and you have depth. Quality depth diminishes the need for big contracts.

You are going to have to pay the ones that turn into starts. But if you do it right, you don't hancuff yourself. Sounds familiar. Also, if you draft well, you may be able to makes some trades. You can trade some talent for more picks to perpetuate the proccess.

Drafting well is still the benchmard. Teams that do so are markedly more consistent. The only worry I have with Gettlemen's approach is the fact that this is his first draft. Gonna be interesting to see how he plays it.

We have drafted some talented players. So we are doing fairly well in that area, lately. Paying that talent a fair deal is where we seem to be off course. Hopefully, Gettlemen rights the ship like most seem to think he can.

given a choice between the two...you do that.

lafell is basically moose-lite. if we draft WR well this year, we let lafell move on. don't need to be over-spending for a pretty average receiver.

we gain more by extending hardy.

that said...i don't see us keeping hardy either. he'll be commanding more money...not CJ money, but still more than we should be spending on one position. look at paul kruger's contract as a baseline.

My opinion is if hardy lights it up again this year I say we do what we can to pay him, people tend to forget he was considered a top 5 pick(possibly #1 overall) at one point. And I don't think we've seen the best of him yet, but we'll see..

i don't forget that, but i also don't let that keep me from protecting cap space. it would be tough, for sure, but we absolutely can't fall for the hurney "you don't let good players leave" trap. once you start down that road, you cripple the rest of the team.

you cannot put that much money into one position...esp. when you are always so close to the cap.

The sky always seems to be falling on this forum during the offseason. The team isn't in that big a mess. Had they not stuck with that read option for half the season, they may have been a playoff team. Gettleman will have us headed towards the playoffs, just have to have faith.

Yeah, that's what make this business so tough... I'm glad we have gettleman for this though.. Since he comes from a team that is probably the best at putting a proper value on players. I still love hardy and would love to keep him... But not at CJ money. *sigh* F*cking hurney...

Gettleman is HC too?

Let's see how Hardy and Lafell do this season. If I were to have to make a decision today, I'd keep Hardy and let Lafell walk. I like Lafell, and he's a cool follow on twitter, but on the field he's nothing special. Could easily be replaced.
