This may derail the thread, but I often wonder about stuff like this.

Think Otah may have had a different "heart" if his second and third seasons were a little different? His rookie year we went 12-4, and then 8-8 in a season that felt like a hangover. And then in his third year the Panthers were clearly just mailing it in, and things looked bleak in general across the league with the lockout and all.

Think players who have problems with motivation and heart would develop them under different coaching staffs, or is that sort of player going to just up and quit no matter the situation he's in?

Even Otah was great when he actually played. The Panthers haven't missed on a pick since 2000, when Tony Softli took over college scouting. Don Gregory replaced him in 2006, and he's still here.

Assuming Gettleman listens to his scouts as well as Hurney did, we shouldn't have to worry about our first pick.

Agreed - I just tend to place him in the "miss" category because of the way things turned out. As far as I can tell no one really could've predicted Otah losing his head like that.

Last year's draft imo could be one of the bests the franchise has ever had. Kuechly and Alexander played very well most of the season. Norman had difficulties but there's still solid potential and Nortman finally figured out how to punt towards the end of the season. The jury is still out on DJ Campbell but he didn't show that he was awful. The only disappointment for me was Joe Adams, and he's still got a season or two to prove that he can do his job.

I'm trying not to get too high on the direction that the team is going, but a similar draft this season will make the Panthers a very dangerous contender for years.

We actually have a nice set of needs to address because many of the blue chip prospects at those positions should be available when we pick. Guard, DT, WR, CB, safety... we can land 2 really good prospects with our first and second.

I think last year's draft was good too, but I think everyone was hoping for a little more out of Adams, Norman and Silatolu. They all still have potential but it would have been nice if we lucked into an immediate stud :).

If there isn't a solid LT prospect available when we pick we have to upgrade our athleticism at outside positions (WR & DB).

We need more firepower and we need to address our secondary which couldn't hold it down in the last few minutes for a lot of our losses
