Would a slot or outside receiver help Cam the most?

i know, he has a hell of deep ball.. which is why i am open to another reciever.. i just don't think Patterson is a significantly better deep threat, or better enough to go with him over Tavon for deep threat-ability alone.

Theres other deep options, but again, no one is a better player than Tavon, so its not a good enough reason.

Tavon is able to break away, therefore is a deep threat

All true but also why I don't think we should really draft with smith in mind. Drafting an outside so he can move to slot is pointless of he retires in the next one or two seasons.

I think we should draft with WR in mind, because we are so used to counting on Smith year in and year out--sooner or later, he will be done.

I think he should be a slot WR right now to make the team better, regardless of how many years he has left. He is not going to continue to be effective on the outside at his height with declining speed.

We will see how Gman handles it.

How is Cordarrelle any better than Tavon? Patterson isn't a deep threat whatsoever. He only had one TD that surpassed 40 yds. The majority of his receptions barely surpassed 15 yards.

I see so many receivers that look good at the combine.Patterson only had 700 yards as a receiver and Austin over 1200 and thats not counting the rushing and return yards....so who is over hyped?

i understand the argument for Patterson but his results in college are very average.

I think with the shape of the franchise this will be Smittys last year and if you want a game changer Austin is the guy regardless if he only played slot.I agree we need a big bodied wr for the redzone but we can add that guy from the Giants or use someone we have on the roster.

Why could Austin not be a deep ball threat? He runs like a 4.34 40.

Like him or not watch him make people miss in this highlight reel,

Vertical threat. He doesn't have that....Olsen can take the over the middle action.

Cam isn't a carve a D up type QB.....he uses his legs and can kill you with the big play.

Actually, I believe that Cam is learning to be a "carve a D up type QB, also. This past season, Cam began to have more success once he began to take what the defense was giving him. I know that this is (or was) not his first inclination, but in order to become that top tier QB that he wants to become it's something that he'll have to add to seriously add to his repertoire.

As for the OP's question, Cam will thrive with another dynamic playmaker who is either outside or in the slot, but who can hopefully mix it up, or at least do enough on the outside so that Smitty can play in the slot with some regularity.

Beautiful isn't it? The footwork is like choreography. His speed is ungodly.

Of course he could be a deep threat.

He can also be everything else.

Don't know where you found Dougity Dog, but that was one helluva video reel that spins Austin in a whole new light. Can't deny that's impressive. Couldn't find one on Cordarelle Paterson, but this one is exciting in its own way. I think Cam would do well with both.

Remember when Jacksonville had like "3-4" 6 footer receivers? Look at Seattle. They probably have the smallest group of receiver last season, and especially now with Harvin. Its not all about size. I just want football players. Just give me football players.

Different type offenses.

We need a deep threat with a big body who can win the jump balls consistently. Calvin, Larry, VJ. A WR that does not require that Cam be perfectly accurate on all the deep throws.

That said, if we have a bad year this year, and Rivera is canned, we may see a different O. And we may even see a different one this year since Chud is gone.

Question should really be, does Newton need a big fast outside WR that can stretch the field or a avg to small speed guy that can stretch the field??

Newton has done well with Smith, who is 5'9, so I really don't think height is a BIG matter for him......

Like i said, if Tavon Austin's avg per catch was comparable to Desean Jackson's while in college i would consider him.

And just because you are a fast guy who can run a 4.3, does not mean you can automatically be a star deep threat in the NFL. That's why General Managers get paid like they do, because you just can't go by stats and measurables.

Scouting who will be successful in the NFL is hard as fugK. Wouldn't want that job......

stretching the field is stretching the field. If you can do it well you can do it.

Field stretchers all have dang good speed. You don't have to run a 4.3 but you need legit speed.
