Now I don't post here very often. In fact I think it has been at least 5 months since my last post. That just shows how little I write posts. Regardless, I read everyday and virtually scroll through every page of topics.

To get to my main point, I'm not sure how most of you feel about what our beloved team has done in the last few days but I am pretty certain that I feel confident and stand behind Gettleman's decision to not go after guys that seem to be a significant upgrade. Now I am not saying at all that most of you think we should sign some guys who would require nice contracts, but I am sure that some of you would like to see them make more aggressive decisions. To argue for my initial statement, I think we have a great core group of players on our defense. For starters our two starting ends are coming together great, hopefully Dwan comes back so were not desperate at DT, DROTY in Keuchly, plus Beason and Davis (barring injuries). Godfrey is serviceable in the run game but seems to have problems at times in coverage. I don't especially care about the Drayton Florence move but at least there is something there with these young guys. Cap seems like he might go elsewhere but who knows. If we lose Munnerlyn look for Gettleman to draft a corner in the upper part of the draft maybe. It all depends on what is there. On the offensive side of the ball I am hoping they draft a RG as high as the second round to help keep that OL young and progressive. A WR or DT in the first would be my preference but to each his own.

Just wanted to state my opinion.

Basically, the Panthers are cash---err, cap-strapped, so they must look for value, which means they have to wait until the weekend to see what's been moved from the main floor to the bargain basement. Gettleman has to be extremely conservative, yet attempt to maximize the money not only to try and fill holes this year, but to prepare for next year as well (taking care not to dig a deeper hole to climb out of due to Marty Hurney's legacy.

That's not necessarily a sum-up, but the reality of the situation. As a result we will probably pick up some older and/or middle of the road guys who may be at a crossroads in their career (that could go one way or another, or serve as straight-up Band-Aids to get by. Now, how successful our FA period in 2013 will be is relative to the available cap space we have, and the real (or possibly perceived) production out of the players that we are able to acquire. So, in that sense it is still too early to really sum it up. But, make no mistake, we won't (and shouldn't overspend), because in the long run it would probably burn us. And, coincidentally, the best run franchises from a historical perspective are sitting back and chilling just like we are,

Isn't Denver pretty much cap-strapped too?

They resign Clady, and added Vasquez, Welker, Bradley and DRC.

If this is still the case on August 15th then get concerned. Anyone who thought we would do much out of the chute haven't been paying attention. We aren't in a win now situation like Denver or like Miami who has to make a big push or risk losing all their fans. None of the free agents we are losing are critical and this team did well with many backups and scrubs at the end of last season. Guys like Gamble and Beason didn't even play much of the year.

The sky isn't falling....................

I must respectfully disagree with this statement. First of all, as long as this guy named Peyton is playing QB in Denver, they'll have no problems keeping the fan base excited. Second, Miami is making major strides in the free agent market and have already improved their team far more than expected.

Carolina was able to keep some of the fan base with the Newton draft, but following the JR lockout debacle, a couple mediocre seasons and Marty Hurney screwing the team's financial situation for another 3 years, I think the Panthers are right on the brink, if not already going over the edge, of losing their fan base. Keep seeing more and more opposing teams' fans in the stadium? Having a hard time recognizing anyone sitting around you at every home game?

This is usually a good sign the PSL owners are selling their seats. And since the stadium is full of paid for seats, the number of fans in the stadium is no indication of fan support. The true indication of a loss of fan support are the numbers of tickets being scalped away any given Sunday morning... and there are a ton of those.

I remember smitty saying early in the season that Hurney's biggest problem was that he relied on young, unproven guys to step in and fill a hole. That's the only thing I'm concerned about right now. I'd like to sign a few veterans that can at least be serviceable starters and then bring in rookies to groom and push them. I'd love to get a RT, 2 DT's, and a safety before the draft. But that's asking a lot considering our cap situation.

DT's rarely play well as rookies and the bust rate is pretty bad if I'm not mistaken. I'd love for Lane Johnson to fall to us but then you have two young players on the online that are being counted on. And if we draft a DT that doesn't work out then we won't be able to take that next step on defense. We are in a tough situation right now and Hurney compounded that by handing out so much money. Hopefully we wait around and the price drops for some of these guys.

This. I have never felt more outnumbered at homes games than the last 3 years. The 2013 season will be even worse with the teams we have coming to town. This is all on JR and Hurney.

      Qbs aren't defined by physical abilities. Brady, Brees, Manning, Montana, Warner,.....doesn't seem to correlate.

      If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
