here's a list of 2013 cap hits by player. whose useless asses do you cut to give yourself some extra room to sign some free agents?

I know these threads end up being a dime a dozen but looking at an actual breakdown of the cap hits by player is pretty revealing. spotrac.com is an awesome source of contract information. here's the breakdown for panthers players' salaries in 2013

There's not enough information given on this particular chart to really factor in cap-reducing strategies like restructuring or extending guys. But from a simple cut perspective there's a couple of things that jump out at me, and that's that we could release a handful of completely useless players and give ourselves some cap relief.

For instance, if we cut Jimmy Clausen and let him pursue his true calling at Subway, and then release Armanti Edwards so he can warm benches in the CFL, and then get rid of Garry Williams since his salary outweighs his production value, and cut Geoff Hangartner because presumably part of that cap money is going to go towards a guard anyway, and you've got...

Clausen - $630,000

Edwards - $630,000

Williams - $1,025,000

Hangman - $1,575,000

for a total of...

$3,860,000

That's almost four million in extra cap space, which would knock our total room up to roughly 6 million (possibly closer to five by the time you factor in Anderson's and Florence's new contracts, which can't be much more than vet minimum.) And that's without restructuring Gross or Beason, cutting Deangelo on June 1, cutting/trading Godfrey, or anything else we've been discussing.

With six million bucks and a solid draft we could easily replace those guys with actual talent and depth that produces and helps win football games. Make it happen Gettleman.

Cutting someone that makes $630K doesn't really save you any money. You have to fill that roster spot after all. I'm not arguing that we should keep Clausen or AE mind you.

no, but ostensibly you're getting production value with money that previously has gotten you none (or at least not measurably comparable to the amount of money you're spending.)

i'd be ok with running two QBs on the roster, and if we draft a WR with a first rounder that's armanti's replacement, grab a tackle in the draft and you've replaced garry williams, grab a veteran FA guard and you've replaced hangartner, probably with a much more capable guy.

Hangartner is also the backup C...that IMO gives him a bump.

We don't need a 3rd QB.

I agree, sorta. I think I would pick up an undrafted free agent QB and keep on the PS. Someone like Renfree from Duke---so he could be learning the playbook and getting a few reps in the event a QB went down.

But we do not need a clipboard holder in the top 53.

It could mean the difference needed in signing a producer and not signing a producer.
