Austin definitely has Harvin's agility and ability to make defenders miss but WV never rarely tried to establish Tavon as a deep threat. Wallace of course is bigger and is the type of receiver that stretches the field with his straight-line speed but when looking at Austin and Wallace, they're more alike than fans realize, especially when arriving to their receiving skills.

Either way, I see The Pats picking him up.

I don't think he has much of a chance of falling to 29 after the combine performance he just had and he will likely impress just as much in private workouts and his pro-day.

Also, I think Austin could allow us to trade back possibly if he isn't our guy. I could see the Vikings wanting another Harvin type player and looking to move up ahead of the Rams to secure Harvin if he is available right before they pick at 16.

The Vikings already have a "Harvin Type" WR in Jarius Wright.. He even stepped in Harvin's shoes when he got injured

Not sure I understand these Mike Wallace comparisons. Austin, from what I have seen and read, isn't viewed as a deep threat. At least at this point in his career he hasn't developed that part of his game but I think he could eventually stretch the field vertically.

Currently, Austin is a matchup nightmare for anyone in the slot and can be lethal running out of the backfield or with sweeps, screens, crossing routes, and what not. He is great at returning kicks and punts and is just a playmaker that can be used in a variety of ways and is the definition of versatile.

As I have said in the draft forum, my only worry is his durability and I wonder if Shula could really use Tavon to the best of his ability to get the most out of him in our offense.

the comparisons for me is the mismatch factor. wallace gets open half the time because big ben is so fuggin hard to take down and who the hell can cover wallace for more than 4 sec while half the team tries to tackle ben..

i would rather take a risk on a sure cut mismatch than drafting a possible one with the bigger wrs. if he can track a deep ball or develop and perfect that skill, thats my point...

drafting back into the late first round and still pick him up would be perfect

Never thought of it that way. I'd agree that they do present similar mismatch problems for defenses. Now that you mention it, the thought of Cam extending a play and finding Tavon wide open with a sea of green in front of him could do quite a bit for this offense in terms of extending drives and getting those big chunk plays.

I just do not see him falling to the late first. His stock has been and will continue to rise as we approach draft day.

These 'bullet' type of players are nice to watch but can they survive in the NFL for more than five seasons? Sproles is a special talent (avoided injuries) but players like DeAnthony Thomas and Tavon Austin have small frames that would scare the crap out of fans and the coaching staff every time a crushing tackle were to be delivered.

Whenever I watch Tavon one of the things I frequently noticed is that he rarely took any big body shots or hits. He was pretty smart about getting out of bounds to avoid contact when no extra yards could be gained and he is just so elusive and fast that quite frankly it is very difficult to get a good lick on him. I do worry about his durability to some extent, though. Hoping he could gain and sustain another 10-15 pounds on his frame.

never seen how these slots can be called so dynamic when they only avg 6 tds a year............rather have someone in the mold of aj green that can create mix match over the middle or deep. and avg 12 tds a year.

lets compare a solid wr in nelson to the best slot wr. als both of these guys have top 5 qbs.

nelson best year he had 1200 yards with 15 tds with an 18avg

welker best year he had 1500 yards with 9 tds wit an 12.2avg

meh you know who im taking and hes not even the best at his positon...lol i could have compared him to moss but i like the little guy, really not trying to make him look bad. lol

hey slots are very useful in strategy but they will not replace a true deep threat playmaker who can also go cross the middle.

like i said before the top tight ends have more of an impact in tds(which is the most important) then the top slot wr.

i believe smith can move into the slot and have good success. they already have olson.....and a guy like lafell. panthers need a true deep threat.

thats what made the ravens so lethal last year. torrey smith and jones ripped the hats off of defense. ravens never stayed behind in games long because in 5 secs joe could rip a long one down field and score in no time.....you got to make defense fear that you can go down the field at anymoment and score with ease.

im trying hard not to compare him to smitty but the size and quickness are there. the nose for the endzone is there. austin does seem to avoid contact while still getting extra yards, it looks as though he is smart about it from what ive seen. does seem thinner but smitty wasnt that much bigger coming out of utah.

obviously 5'9 smitty would just act like a pissed off 6'5 wr and run past you or through you. cant expect the wr comparisons to even be a thought when it comes to his heart and grit. so no he's not like him atm, but who really knows, he could have something to prove too.
