Why can't we ever just make a splash?

Harvin was traded, not released.

No one would suggest the niners are building around Boldin, and we wouldn't have been for giving up a 6th round or late round pick for him. He would be great to have opposite Smith and with another young WR added.... are you kidding me? Did you watch the postseason? Do you watch teams other than the Panthers? Boldin can flat out play this game and has 3 or 4 seasons left in him at this level likely.

For a sixth rounder? Jesus... That's why the Niners are going back to the Super Bowl while we're headed to Head Coach emporium.

When we go to the NFCCG one year, then go to the Superbowl the next year, then we will go pick up someone who we think is the final piece. Until then we have way too many issues to worry about picking a 32 year old receiver on his last leg to somehow get us over the hump. We have a better model in Smith already.

If he was so great then why did the Ravens dump him for a 6th rounder? You would think that if he was so important to the superbowl champs they would have kept him. I wonder what they know that you don't?

The Ravens had to dump someone because they just signed Flacco to a megadeal. He was getting cut so they hedged their bets.

We've had quite a bit of FA busts, might scared off JR from handing out his checkbook to whatever GM we have. Well see if that changes in the coming years with gettleman when we have cap space

Can you list the top tier FA busts we've had? Honestly in the last decade, we have not signed a top tier guys. Second tier guys like Lucas/Wahle/Kemo all produced for at least a couple years and we didn't take huge hits to keep them. I can't recall us ever getting a high level guy who simply didn't play or tied up cap space. The truth is we've always played it conservative and had a "build through the draft" philosophy that has kept us a average team year after year.

"build through the draft" is something every single team does.

Hurney just suckered an entire portion of the fanbase into thinking saying that means that's all you should do and did it suggestively implying not filling holes, even ridiculously vacuous, abyssal holes in talent at certain positions through free agency is a-okay because we never have any real money to spend here but let's not say that

Flacco's contract is cap friendly this year counting something like 6 million this year. They could have kept Boldin but knew he was over the hill and getting rid of him now is the only way to get anything for him.

Lucas and Wahle were paid top dollar. They were the marquee FAs in their class. We signed Wahle to such a big contract that everyone assumed he must be moving to Tackle because of the money involved.

Same with hartwig, Sean Gilbert. These other guys weren't top dollar but; DJ Hackett, Landon Johnson. They just seemed to disappoint

Wrong, look back. Lucas and Wahle both had a average of about 5 million a year, and the salary cap was only slightly lower then it is now.
