Build Through the Draft Thread

You can't put together a solid team by simply building through the draft. You have to fill in the holes with proven free agents. Gentleman said it. Hopefully he follows through with it.

Need cap space....he has none until he tangles with the real Hurney mess.

Every team builds through the draft. Some are just better than others in doing it. We have also built through free agency and through trades as well, but just not with big name folks. What annoys me is the constant accusations that we don't build through free agency when that is not the case at all. We just don't widely spend. Panther fans who have followed the team for the past 17 years know that we have tried that strategy many times almost always with average to poor results.

Remember chuck smith in 2000, 2 games for 21 million.

The team also started Carlos Rodgers, Donte Whitner, etc....pretty big FA signings in recent times. They also will gamble in FA with Moss, old Boldin etc

see redskins and philly......you build through home grown drafted talent......people who LOVE fa have gms that dont know how to pick talent......

wouldnt mind a couple mid tier fa for positions hard to develop like dt or cb or s....

One of many failures over the years. Who remembers the guy we signed several years ago who sat out the year before it even started. He had the decency to give the money back.

You know who else is a build through the draft team? The fugging 49ers. And guess what they have? Draft picks! Lots of them. Young talent! Lots of it. And they are also looking at free agents. God this time of year pisses me off as a Panther fan.

2003 - Jake, Davis, Prohel

2005 - Wahle, Lucas

Those are our NFCC years.....big FA investments. Those are also the only years we have won a playoff game. We also weren't deemed a player or two away from being damn good teams.

All those guys were on the back 9 of their careers as well, with the exception of Jake. Buckner used to say on his radio show, they key to finding good free agents is finding guys that have something to prove.

So? They were big reasons we became good and made our runs....NFCCG game or better runs. You don't have to of made the postseason the year prior to think legit FAs now make sense.

If we could have done that every year we might have a lombardi by now. For all those guys we have had 5 times that many who were busts or not worth the money.

But it worked....I guess we could settle for the current model and avoid them....and try to continue our impressive tradition of losing and not winning playoff games. We have settled into some funk where we don't bring in real bodies from outside....hopefully Gettelmen changes that by year 2 of his era.

Can't do it every year and I don't expect Gettlemen to do it this year.....but soon. Rivera needs to show if he stays or goes and then Gettlemen should swing for the fence IMO.

My point was you go after guys like that. Guys that might have a couple years left and want to prove they are still players. You don't just build through the draft you supplement with those types of guys.
