Tavon Austin

Recommended Posts

Meh.......Stedman has avg speed right? Why don't you put him in the slot and let Tavon use his 4.3 speed to stretch the field in college? Are the coaches dumb? Or is it that the slot fits his play skill better?

Every deep threat in the Nfl that I look up, while in college; had at least a 15-20 average per catch, with about 46 balls caught, seven touchdowns and about 852 yards.

Nothing really stands out about them EXCEPT their AVERAGE PER CATCH!

Kind of hard for Austin to have a high average per catch. 35% of the time he was receiving a 4 inch touch pass stright from Smith. That is the reason for his low average per catch.

Also I wouldnt call Holgersen dumb his teams usually have the highest producing QB and WR every year. One reason Im not high on Geno Smith. Good QB but the system he ran is why he had a high completion percentage.

It's too early to make a final judgment, but by your logic we can't draft a player at any position if an unproven player is already in that spot. We're not talking about a highly talented player that the organization invested a lot in. Adams was a 4th round pick who has played like worse. If the slot receiver/space player position is important enough to the offense to warrant a high pick, Tavon is a blue-chip player. It's like saying we shouldn't draft a corner because of Josh Norman, except Josh Norman can actually get ont he field for us right now.

I'm not saying teams don't do it. I just don't think it's smart for this team. We are not a team that offense runs threw having a great slot WR. So why use such a high pick on one? That's like drafting a scat back in the 1st round and your a powering run team. It a nice addition but one you shouldn't spend highly on.

When's the last time that we had three good wide receivers to consistently run out there?

Although with the way Olsen and Tolbert are paid, you're likely correct. Going to be an interesting pick if Tavon is still on the board.

Smitty, Moose, and Prohel. But Wiggins was the TE not a player like Olsen. And like you said we didn't have a FB like Tolbert who needs touches.

Still not buying into Tavon as a deep threat, but he might be a good Wes Welker type of slot. If you notice most slots always catch a lot of balls anyways, but sometimes deep threat will catch a lot of balls too.

Difference is that deep threats avg 15 yards per catch when they snab a 100 balls and slots avg 11 yards per catch when they snab a 100 balls.

You look at avg per catch to see if a guy is a deep threat. Sorry guys unless you come with numbers......IM NOT GOING TO LISTEN. Patton can play in the slot and the outside. And he has not reached his potential...lol I bet they thought Jerry Rice had reached his ceiling because he came fro a small school. LOL

I have not seen many deep threats in the NFL that did not show that ability in college.

Even an undrafted free agent like Victor Cruz wasn't just a unknown slouch. DUDE was a DEEP THREAT IN COLLEGE. He just happened to go to a small school.

Bring more stats and facts or don't bother replying back. PEACE!

LOL at "sometimes deep threat will catch a lot of balls too"

According to your logic of 15 ypc @ 100 balls, there are approximately 5-6 "deep threats" currently playing in the nfl, and maybe similar for "slot" guys.

Victor Cruz had a whopping average of 12.7 YPC, and had LESS OF A YPC AVERAGE THAN HAKEEM NICKS AND DOMENIK HIXON...

Cruz also only had a staggering 18.2% of his targets as considered Deep Pass Attempts (greater than 15 yards from the LOS.) By comparison, Calvin Johnson (one of the only players to meet your ridiculous "deep threat" criteria) had over 40% of his passes as deep attempts.

Also, in the top 20 for Deep Pass Attempts, there are only two players that averaged 10 or more yards per reception. By comparison, in the bottom 20 for DPA, there are 18 players that averaged 10 or more yards per catch (with the other two averaging 9 and 9.8)... This indicates that you get more yards if you throw it less than 15 yards, if you aren't following.

And another thing... Players targeted less than 15 yards more often had a very much higher percentage to catch the ball as well as get more yards... This indicates that you also have a better chance to catch the ball if it is less than a 15 yard pass.

http://wp.advancednflstats.com/playerstats.php?year=2012&pos=WR&season=all

Go there and sort it out for yourself.

I stand by that Austin can be a threat from the backfield, the outside, or in the slot... all of which he did at WVU and even before that as a RB (which does nothing but help his value)... and all of which are lethal weapons in the NFL...

WHAT!!!!

Look up Marvin Harrison buddy. Caught a 115 balls and had a 15 avg(round off)...I don't have to lie. Of course when he caught 144 passes it went down, but that's just GODLY ANYWAYS.(Also proves deep threats can catch over a 100 balls, Reggie Wayne does it too.....and they can go deep anytime....WELKER CAN'T....well he can but it ends incomplete or INT)

Tavon was not a deep threat in college. Smith was. What don't you understand about that. It's not that hard kid. Every deep threat in the NFL caught deep passes in college with a 15-20 avg.....LOOK UP COLLEGE NUMBERS NOT NFL...LOL ( You don't wanna do that because you know you are wrong)

And I saw way more guys than just Calvin with 15-20 yards per catch average LOLOLOLOLOL( That's what I'm arguing. 15-20 is the ideal deep threat.....so don't know what you were trying prove there buddy)

Stop saying he is Smitty 2.0 BECAUSE HIS NUMBER DON'T EVEN COMPARE TO SMITHS(20 avg) WHILE IN COLLEGE. LOL And he does not compare to Desean Jackson(18 avg) either....STOP IT!

Also there are three different type of slots.

Welker-short and quick, sure handed good route runner.........Cruz-deep threat, intermediate guy..............Boldin-big strong guy, but still has decent speed and break tackles.

Then you have Tight Ends, that sometimes can be considered slots...they are a combination of Boldin(80%) and Cruz(20%).(Compares more to Boldin type though), just way taller most times.

Welker has got beat by Boldin and Cruz. Both of those type of slots have SUPERBOWL WINS. WELKER DOES NOT. JOE IS NOT EVEN BETTER THAN BRADY...LOL Colston(intermediate slot) has a superbowl and no one even knows him. LOL.

Brandon Stokley has more career TDS than WELKER.....LOLOLOLOLOLOL And he has a SUPERBOWL!!!!

SLOTS ARE A DIME A DOZEN. NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THEM.(Unless you give me a Boldin or Cruz)

EVEN Percy Harvin had a 16.2 avg in college...LOLOLOL He is a intermediate slot to ME.

Tavon might be a decent slot(Welker) guy, but a deep threat he is not(based off stats). Keep on believing in fairy tales and in your heart kid...rather than looking at college stats, to know how a player projects to the NFL. HA!

Even an unknown guy like Cecil shorts had a 17 avg in college. Now he has produced a 17 avg with Jags..... last year. He is a young deep threat on the rise.....No telling what he would have did, if he didn't have lame Gabbert throwing him the ball.

Even Luck had T.Y Hilton who posted 15 to 24 avg while college.....another small school unknown guy.It does not matter what school they went to, just what their avg per catch was. Now Hilton had a 17 avg last year with Colts and was in the playoffs!

Also Victor's "deep threat avg" shows when he goes into the 4th quarter(18 avg)....probably because NYG start throwing to score real quick(which proves my point...deep threats allow you score QUICK and COMEBACK TO WIN CLOSE GAMES). And why would Hakeem Nicks having a better avg than him matter......he is also a deep threat. Their numbers looked off this year because Giants only started throwing deep the in the 4th quarter buddy. Also Cruz and Nicks have averaged 15-20 yards a whole season. Cruz's highest avg was 19 while Nick's highest was 17.

LOL Nevermind that Marvin Harrison had his stats padded by one of the GOAT QBs if not the GOAT.

]Tavon was not a deep threat in college. Smith was. What don't you understand about that. It's not that hard kid. Every deep threat in the NFL caught deep passes in college with a 15-20 avg.....LOOK UP COLLEGE NUMBERS NOT NFL...LOL ( You don't wanna do that because you know you are wrong)

I'm saying he can be a deep threat in the NFL. College numbers don't matter once you take the leap to the NFL. You aren't Nostradamus, either, and the stats I used were last year's (since the league style is constantly evolving, they are the most relevant.) Tavon didn't have to have a "deep threat average" in college because he wasn't asked to do that. He was a converted RB going into his freshman year, and probably 60% of all his touches came from either returns or out of the backfield. I watched pretty much every WVU game the past 4 years. I bet you didn't.

And I saw way more guys than just Calvin with 15-20 yards per catch average LOLOLOLOLOL( That's what I'm arguing. 15-20 is the ideal deep threat.....so don't know what you were trying prove there buddy)

You said deep threats averaged 15 YPC on 100 catches. There were approximately 4-5, if that, guys that had 100 catches or more with an average that high.

Stop saying he is Smitty 2.0 BECAUSE HIS NUMBER DON'T EVEN COMPARE TO SMITHS(20 avg) WHILE IN COLLEGE. LOL And he does not compare to Desean Jackson(18 avg) either....STOP IT!

Different offenses. Different supporting casts. Same style and swag. Plus, I don't think I've ever called him Smitty 2.0, kid.

The rest of your post is just mindless drivel where you continue to refer to collegiate history like all these other players had come from the WVU offense like Austin has, or that they have done really anything in the NFL after a couple seasons.

Just face it. You have a bias against the guy just because... well... just because...

Maybe you like to argue or something? lol

OHH SOO MARVIN "HOF" HARRISON IS A SCRUB NOW!!!!!! I see how we play this game now......hmmmmmmm

NO you don't want to adress the rest of the drivel because you know i have good point..

The good ole trick to throw up the white flag statement"lets pretend he's stupid since he actually has a valid point that I can't contend with", on BIGSYKE again...I see how this board works, but guess what?? I will have the last laugh.... AND boy AM I going to throw it in everybody FACE when I'M RIGHT!

Again with the type of offense excuse.,,,,,LOLOLOL guess you couldnt use the QB EXCUSE LOL.....Tavon can not play on the outside.....he has not proven THAT HE CAN BE AN CONSTANT DEEP THREAT. STOP!

DUDE just stop. You have no real points. You just want Tavon because he ran a 4.3. FINE draft him, but don't be surprised when he cant get off of press coverage or can't handle physical corners,( or big hits by safeties)

I like to argue?? YEAH fugIN right. I only argue when i have a good point. Like i said, I'm going to laugh so much when TAVON turns out to be nothing more than a SLOT WR.

DO i hateTAVON? NOPE!!!! SO HOW AM I biased? LOL You never see me talking up Patton much everyday, because i'm confident in my prospect...are you?? But just because i like him(Tavon) don't mean i'm going to blindly say hes a deep threat, when he does not have the average to qualify him as one .

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY SPEED GUYS THAT HAVE BEEN BUST????????

College stats don't matter yeah, but I'm going off of important stats that tell what type of player a prospect is. IT rarely fails. Like I said you don't want to look up the stats(avgpercatch) while in college because you know you are wrong. But you will be quick to tell me all his other stats to make him look good....!!!LOLOLOL

And for your info there are 3 different type of slots....so how is that mindless drivel....You don't even study football if you think I made that up.....Just for that, I know I'm waisting my time with a casual fan, who does not know about the NFL in depth...LOL

I won't respond back to a kid who does not know football and the different type of slotwr LOLOLOLOL. smh..........

Oh I will have many people to respond to....didn't you just respond...with your wv shades on..LOLOLOL

fug nickzz...Who da fug are you? .....If you want to join the conversation join....But make sure you talk football buddy.

LOL I'M GOING to laugh my ass off when I'M right. LOLOLOL

Something is wrong with me because I don't agree with the masses??? Tell that to the great thinkers of the past who had their own fuging mind buddy. LOL

I'm sure the people who said Cam would come in and break records was crazy too. LOLOLOL

Its just fuging football and I have a fuging opinion that is backed by fuging stats, that dummies refuse to look at.

Keep throwing up those "white flag comments that have nothing to do with the argument" just lets me know I've won. Thanks KIDS!
