Tavon Austin

Recommended Posts

Honestly dude you said why Tavon has a small avg......which mean most of his passes came from the slot.. In college he played most snaps from the slot....right? So why get mad at me because I think this guy is just a slot?

Did you see the Percy pic? Is Tavon that big??? How well will he be able to take hits from over the middle from big safeties?

DOES HE HAVE AN INJURY HISTORY?

Can you please use some videos because you say I can't go by stats....so show me where Tavon is going deep. Come on man I know you have some good tape on him. Show me what I'm missing because I've yet to see it on youtube. Hoping you got some good tape buddy.

I'm waiting......

BigSyke asked for examples of Tavon Austin going deep; :40, 2:25, 3:05, 3:55, 4:55, 7:40. Those last two being particular good examples of Austin's skills. It is true that Austin was not WV's preferred deep threat. His skillset overall translates more to working underneath and picking YAC. But that in no way means he can't go deep when asked.

Because most of his passes cames from touch passes from Smith. That play was ran about 20% of the time this year and last year, Killed Austins average per catch but helped his YAC.

Thanks man! I really was talking abut versus tape though, where I could watch every snap that he takes during the game. But yeah thanks anyways.

I also believe that the slot best fits him. And maybe Tavon can do good his first year like Percy, but remember that the Vikings went to the playoffs without Percy last year. So Tavon will help smith and lafell downfield??? Maybe, but will a slot get you over the middle so you can WIN the superbowl. Panthers have already been to the superbowl!! They need to WIN IT!!!

Victor Cruz had a 19 avg when the Giants won the superbowl. I just don't see suprbowl teams without deep threats man.I mean show me one superstar slot(welker type) that won the superbowl lately.

NOOO what im saying is WHY didnt they ask him to go deep more??

That makes me think he lacks the skill to do it........that has been my concern. If you are doin the most to win the game, wouldn't a speed guy like austin on the outside be the best? Since he's surehanded and fast?? Slots are only known for being sure handed not fast.

West Virginia had one of the best offenses in the nation with Tavon doing what he was doing. They wanted Tavon to get the ball as much as possible, not send him deep. Since you just said that he catches well and is fast, what makes you think that he can't run deep? What skill do you think he is missing?

I'm not sure if he can get off press coverage. Like if he has to face a shutdown corner like Patton did in Jonathan Banks while in college.

And like I said I could name many guys who ran fast who turned out to be bust......check Oakland. Not saying that Tavon will be a bust, but just because you run fast does not mean you are automatically a deep threat in the NFL. Smith had the vertical leap and the yard average per catch to back up the thought that he MIGHT be a deep threat in the NFL. Also he was very tough for a lil guy, not to mention blazing fast.

I also don't think he can constantly take hits over the middle from NFL safeties, Percy barely does it and he is bigger than Austin.

Percy had injury concerns throughout college, though. He's had migraine issues and missed games in every year of college ball. He actually never played Alabama in his three years at Florida, missing both games with an injury. Tavon has never missed a practice at WVU. He's got the tough and fast.

He could struggle against press coverage. He did put up 225 14 times at the combine, so he's strong enough to push someone away, but he's still potentially giving up 20 pounds to a corner. Here's my question: who the hell presses a guy with 4.3 speed? If he gets off the line, it's over, and that's something Proehl is going to be working on from day 1 if the plan is to play him outside.

LOL. No one passes by a guy with 4.3 that is 6'3-6'6.....yeah I would understand you guys then. I would look crazy LOL...

Remember Percy went into the late 20's, D-Jack went into the 2nd round and Smitty went into the 3rd round. Look at Mike Wallace and guys like TY Hilton, they all went in lower rounds. I just feel like a lot of you guys are over hyping Tavon's round selection.

But Tavon is not that big man. How much does he weigh? And Percy benched 225 19 times if I recall right.

Also NFL safeties hit way harder man. I still question Tavon's ability to hold up in this league. Just because you stayed healthy in college does not mean you will stay healthy in the NFL.....I mean there are a lot of examples.

From what I've read, he actually is good against press coverage. He's so quick and his first step is so good that it's hard for CB's to get their hands on him. So basically, he doesn't have any problem getting off the line. He's really a double edge sword for a CB. If you try to press him and he beats the press, your toast, but if you play back, he can take a pass at the los and turn it into a 15-20 yard gain.
