Chris Gamble to Retire

Wrong again it accelerates the cap hit all the same from signing bonus, however he is still going to have DEAD money on all the remaining years of the contract that would not have counted had he retired.

No.

Question 1.12

What happens if a player is traded or retires?

Answer: We already know that if a player is waived on or before June 1, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Acceleration also occurs when a player is traded or waived and picked up by another team. The new team is not responsible for any of the original signing bonus. The team that waived or traded the player is responsible for the accelerated signing bonus (in the same manner as described above).

In most cases, if a player retires, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Thus, the team will take an immediate salary cap hit of the remaining signing bonus.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I said in the post you quoted.

TBQH - I was a little dissapointed we didn't try to work something out to retain Gamble, but after reading this it makes me feel 100X better about the move.

If Gamble is serious about this retirement, it just proves his heart wasn't in the game anymore.

Not getting the full cap relief from him retiring is more snacke bit juice for the franchise.

He may have felt its not worth the effort to go elsewhere and lose out to someone else.

He walks away with his health and youth and a nice bank acct. He will be fine.
