Gil Brandt now says...

Recommended Posts

It is an issue, Steve won't last much longer and after he and LaFell there's very little to count on at this point.

This.

I actually feel good about LaFell as our #2. However, we've only seen him as a #2 while playing opposite a very good #1. It's safe to assume that he benefits from the attention Smitty gets.

The biggest concern is that we have no proven production beyond Smitty and LaFell. Adams and Pilares are still projects and it's not out of the question that one or maybe even both aren't even on the final roster this season. I doubt Murphy will be back. Gettis will be a bonus if we ever get anything out of him again.

In short, we have an aging #1 with hopefully a couple of years left in the tank and then we have a serviceable #2. That's it. WR is definitely a need.

Allen is really good. The only thing I'm worried about is his health.

On a separate note, I'm a bit concerned at the way the Huddle judges draftniks. Brandt said Cam would be good, so Brandt's good. Mayock was a Cam hater, so he must suck. The bigger picture gets lost.

Mayock was not a Cam hater. He simply said that Cam had to have his head completely in it. He actually said he could be great before the draft if he would commit himself and work on it, stay away from trouble and be a leader. He said he had all the physical talent in the world.

Gil Brandt was one of the few fully on the Cam bandwagon and said, 'they would be foolish to not take him first'.

He had a pretty good history in the NFL....if he thinks the WR is worth taking, he probably is.

Gil Brant is a wise man who does his homework. His opinion is worth listening to....IMO.

I'm just trying to describe how the huddle portrays Mayock; not my own opinion of him.

No thanks to Allen. He's a possession receiver. I don't see how he would fit into an offense like ours. We already got LaFell, why do we need Allen? I rather target Bailey or Rogers.

He's fast and makes play all over the field ik how that's a possession receiver. He's nothing like LaFell at all.

People that are classifying Allen as a possession WR are grossly undervaluing his ability. He has the ability to catch a screen and take it the distance and can also play all three WR positions. He's the best combination of size, speed, and production at the WR position in this draft.

His change of direction and quickness for his size are impressive as well. He suffered from some really bad QB play at Cal. The only red flag at the moment is this PCL injury but he's expected to workout April 9th. If completely healthy, I'd expect him to run in the 4.4s.

one thing underated about him is he has lined up at all 3 WR spots which NFL teams love.

Really? Cuz once Allen gets touched by a DB or LB, it's over 70-80% of the time. I rarely saw Allen fight for extra yards and break tackles in those three Cal games I watched. Keenan, to me, screams possession receiver.

He appears to be a solid second round pick up.

Allen played in a west coast offense in college which means he ran a lot of short, underneath routes so a lot of the yards he picked up were from YAC.

Not saying you're wrong, but he always fought for extra yards in the games that I've watched which were quite a few over the last 3 years.

The only way I see Allen going in the 2nd is if teams have questions about his knee.
