Panthers Issue Statement in Response to Deadspin Report

Yeah, I get all that as a former NC resident I'm well aware of the tax structure. But Mecklenburg County does have real and personal property taxes and this is likely where the $1.7-2M a year you're quoting comes from.

It's no secret Mecklenburg County has some of the highest tax rates in the Southeast, let alone NC, and I'm one of those people who don't believe the tax payers should be shouldering the burden for a privately owned entity to make itself more profitable by paying for its improvements.

The city doesn't see any money from the Panthers profit. The city doesn't have a local income tax. Any income tax the Panthers pay would be to the state and federal government.

City is funded by property taxes. The Panthers paid $1,713,434.46 to the city on January 3, 2013.

They have paid between $1.7 and $2 million in property taxes every year for at least the last 9 years. The database does not go back any further than that. Not sure if that means it wasn't digitized prior to 2004 or if the Panthers didn't pay property tax prior to 2004.

The city owns the land the stadium sits on, which is valued at about $62.5 million, but the city obviously doesn't pay taxes to itself and the Panthers don't have to pay tax on land they are leasing.

The city values the stadium at around $134,000,000, although I don't know how they arrive at that number.

The city also collects hotel tax revenue, car rental tax revenue, and tax from prepared meals. The amount to which the Panthers contribute to that would be very difficult to accurately quantify, but I think it would be fair to say that it is significantly higher than the amount of property tax they pay each year.

Thats why one day, charlotte will have an empty stadium not bringing in anything (or at least what it could have with the Panthers), except dust. Wonder what it would cost to have to tear it down? Anyway, Charlotte is making money (directly or indirectly) from the panthers being there, as well. I don't have a problem with public funds going to keep a team, how much is another story. There are a lot of other cities that would love to have an NFL team....

BTW- the some of the ones whinning about use of public funds and not helping keep this buniness, will be the same ones that whine about the team not spending money to bring top talent....

1. So... the Panthers essentially admit to tanking the 2010 season, opting to label it "team had strategically reduced its spending."

2. Since selling my PSLs, I no longer care about how "profitable" the Panthers may or may not be. What I'd really like to know is just how much taxes they pay. If they make $120M or $1M it means nothing to Charlotte unless they're paying their share of taxes.

Just watching on the NFL network last night, how Jimmy Johnson traded their best player (Hershel Walker) to the Vikes for 5 players or contingent draft picks. Sat those players (even though they were better than what he had on the field) went 1-15, and choose to take the draft picks. Tanked the season on purpose (admitting it), choose Aikmen #1 and built the team around him...how many Super Bowls did the Johnson Cowboys win again????

Sometimes, a step back gets you 3 steps forward, for the long term.

Wonder if Dallas doesn't mind spending public funds to keep the Cowboys there, as well.

Maybe JR is a history scholar and wants to repeat JJs' success...

What is this "cash flow" business??? And why on earth would a liberal SPIN site misrepresent the old rich white guy??? The panthers FO must be the ones lying...

And one last point. Why in the hell do people keep saying old WHITE guy. As if we all walk up to the vending machine of life and choose our race. Would we say Bob Johnson former Bobcat owner is is an old rich Black guy, in every opinion on him?
