The WR connundrum: Playing WR Roulette

top dawg

Recommended Posts

Every year there is a reason why we have to pass up on presumably the most talented WRs in the draft. Not that we didn't have a compelling reason when we drafted Cam, but damn, what about all the rest of the years? There is always a reason. There are always some justifications and/or rationalizations why we have to pass, from needs to "that guy doesn't warrant a 1st round draft pick", or "that guy isn't Megatron". You get the picture.

Now, it has been year after year of leaving 89 out to dry, whether by mistake or not. Yeah, we've tried, but sometimes you get what you draft, err ask for. What do yo really expect out of a bunch of later round picks, and is it likely for a WR1 or 2 to come as an UDFA (from the practice squad)? And, then there is FA, where we have basically picked up a few has-beens in the twilight of their career or a hack (ett). Man, have we been unlucky or what?

The one year that we could have drafted a boss WR is the same year our hand was forced to gamble and get our franchise QB (finally), and the year hat we had a top 10 pick, there were really no sure-fire beasts at WR to be had. And, it seems that we are in a similar situation this year, except that this year we are broke and it doesn't seem feasible to get a WR1 in FA, and all the WR1s in the draft are arguably 2nd round talent that may not last until our second pick. WTF, man! We are seemingly going to have to get lucky again to get someone in here that even has somewhat of a possibility to become the heir apparent to an aging Steve Smith. Lord knows that if the coming seasons follow the script that we would write, we are not going to be in a position to get the next Megatron or Green for the coming seasons, so unless we start compiling draft picks (a la the Pats or 49ers) who are, and have been, in a better position to do so, when the fug is the treadmill of bringing in question marks at the WR position going to end for this franchise. When is the madness going to stop?

I hope the New GM doesn't reach for a player with a lot of flaws just to appease some star struck fans.

Star struck and the Huddle regulars don't go together.

No GM worth his salt (or who wants to keep his job) is going to pick based on appeasing fans. Even Hurney didn't pick Edwards based on appeasing fans, he picked AE because he apparently had a brain fart---got sentimental or something.

What player doesn't have flaws? Oh, a "lot of flaws". Are you insinuating that the top 5 WRs in this draft have "a lot of flaws"?

No I'm insinuating that the top WR's this year are not much different then the WR's you can get in the 2nd and 3rd round. No elite got to have prospect.

The same can probably be said of a lot of the players at positions that we need. We are not going to get the "NFL-ready" guys sitting at 14. For example: Lets say we can get Vacarro. I can't say with all surety that he is that much better than Bacarri Rambo, D.J. Swearinger, or many others.

The same can be said for other positions from CBs to DTs. Which player is going to make the most immediate impact, who can tell? There are no Lucks or Kuechly's in this draft (that we are in line to get) unless we get lucky with a healthy Star Lotuleile.

That's not true. I think you can get better Oline and Dline starters in the 1st round then you can in the 2nd and 3rd. Now CB after the 1st 3 (Millner, Rodhes and Trufant) it drops in talent. You also must factor in if a run on 1 position will happen.

Milliner is the obvious class of the CBs according to reports. Yeah, Rhodes and Trufant may go in the first, but someone who needs a WR would be a fool to pick them before Patterson. Johnothan Banks may still be available in the second, but Logan Ryan, Jamar Taylor and Jordan Poyer will be available. As far as DTs are concerned, you have Johnathan Hankins and Johnathan Jenkins who still should be available, as well as Kawann Short. Larry Warford, OG, should be there in the second when we pick. Dude played strong against Floyd and Richardson.

All I am saying is that we got options. No need to be shortsighted. We are still got pro days, workouts, and most importantly FA to patch up some holes.

We have drafted wrs in the first 3 rounds. Jarrett was a pretty high second rounder and LaFell was drafted in the top half of the third. Add that Olsen is a te/wr who is a first rounder and we haven't exactle ignored the position in the draft/ free agency. I suspect we will pick up a few guys again this year. I am just pleased that Smitty has been so durable and productive that it hasn't hurt us so much not to have a number 1 wr in the wings.

Well said. People forget that we went after and got Olsen.

Others saying we don't have weapons on offense is just silly.

Our offense has been pretty good considering how it was for much of our last 10 years. People seem to forget that our offends struggled much of the time under Fox. Our offense has been top 10 or so under Rivera.

Gettleman has stated picking BPA or trade down. Our WRs will be better if we give Cam more time to throw. We have to improve our OL. If we take a good LT at #14 and move Gross to RT, our line is greatly improved. We can let Hangman go or let him be a quality backup. Move Bell to RG and our line is set for 2013. With our great RBs, Olsen, Smitty, Lafell, and a new TE (draft pick) we could be a force. This also keeps our defense rested. We could use the rest of our draft on upgrading our defense. Thoughts....
