While I think Hunter and even Hopkins will be good players, Patterson excites in a way that few players are able to. Patterson catches with his body, doesn't extend his arms and runs shitty routes. All those things are very coachable. Not trying to start ANOTHER discussion about Patterson but this is how I view things.

That's what I'm thinking. You are not gonna pass on a guy you absolutely think is going to be a beast, even if if is not NFL-ready on draft day. It's all going to come down to his workouts and what Gettleman thinks.

Once again it all depends on who is there at 14, and who we pass over with that pick if we do decide on Patterson. But I think he is gonna be sensational, regardless if he turns into an Elite receiver.

Allen or Patterson would be nice but if you go DT you help 2 positions (both the D-line and our secondary thru a better pass rush/collapsed pocket). Kalil is coming back which makes the O-line instantly better so my vote is DT in the first, then CB or S in the second.

I don't think Smitty's replacement comes to us this year.

So Hunter is taller longer .02 slower (coming off a acl injury) jumps higher and has bigger hands.

And While Hopkins is slower and shorter he has bigger hands and very explosive in his own right.

Not to mention he produced 82 rec. 1,405 yards and 18TD!!!

So with all this data I put in front of you I have a few questions.

1. What makes Patterson "athletic ability" thru the roof and why does he have a chance to be a elite talent and Hunter's doesn't?

2. Does 18TD not excite you?

3. What would be more bang for our bucks? A guy learning how to be a WR or 2 guys who already know?

4. Doesn't the fact that Hunter and Hopkins have already been number 1 WR on a team. Give them a better chance then Patterson of becoming 1 in the Pro's?

Raw is made up of shades, and no two raw players are the same, so comparisons are pointless.

Some players, like Cam, are considered raw because they haven't done something (like take snaps from under center or reading a defense) and people assume it will take time for them to learn how...if they can ever learn it. But others, like Patterson, are considered raw because we have seen them do everything they will be expected to do in the NFL, but have clear weaknesses that must be corrected before they can live up to their potential.

I like Patterson, and was high on the possibility of taking him at 14. However, the more I hear and see about him, the more wary I become. There is no doubt that he is explosive...particularly with the ball in his hands in the open field. My concern comes with pretty much every other aspect of his game. They were talking the other night on Path to the Draft about how he jumps for most balls, even when he doesn't need to, and that receivers like that are almost always body catchers...and when I watch clips of him, that is exactly what I see. He also is not a skilled route runner at this point. And from what I have heard and read, he is not considered the most intelligent of guys and was not giving teams a good impression in the interviews at the combine.

With that said, I think he will be a good receiver, and definitely worth at least a 2nd, but I am not sold on the fact that he will fix his flaws to the extent that he will ever become a clear #1 receiver. But I do believe he can be at least a solid #2, so if we do take him, I think he does add value and makes the team better.

You made some statements in your post. I showed you data that disputes those statements. Then I asked some very good question.

1. Who said that Hunter doesn't? The fact still remains that the preponderance of the experts rank Patterson higher. Patterson is bigger, tougher, stronger and more physical. He is also a better runner, particularly in the open field, and has greater vision than the other two. He is also an effective KR.

2. Not really. What matters is what they are going to do at the pro level against pro competition.

3. According to the scouting reports, all three of them have work to do to become proficient NFL WRs. All three of them could stand to run better routes, and have to learn to become polished, so this is a non-issue.

4. Also a non-issue. If Patterson had had more time in the SEC, then he is likely to have had the unofficial title of WR1. Some team's 2s project to be better pros than another team's 1s. All the time. In the case of Patterson and Hopkins, they have somehow eclipsed their own 1s in the minds of most scouts.

The fact is KKL, that the decision is going to come down to what the pros think, not members of football forums. Like I have always said, I just think due diligence is in order. At this point it is too early to reject Patterson or any WR out of hand for our pick, or any other team's pick. So this is not really about CP, per se, but of course he is widely regarded as the top professional prospect in the draft at the WR position. But, of course if Lotuleile is there I think we'll pick him if we think his ticker is OK, so all I can do is hope that a WR destined for greatness is there in round 2 (or lower).

Gah, if we missed Loutlelei by a pick I'd be bummed. If all those offensive linemen are gone, I'd take a long look at the safety from Texas then decide on him, Fluker, or Patterson. I just don't know much about Richardson, honestly.

historically when a tremendous talent that would benefit Carolina greatly gets snatched right before our turn the Panthers have done some stupid poo. For instance, if Denver doesn't select Clady in 2008 Hurney doesn't instantly go aspergers about drafting first round running backs and trading up for poo players two years in a row.
