Ramses Barden and Domenik Hixon

Gucci Mane

We have a star receiver that produces.

What makes you think these guys aren't better than Louis Murphy and company? You do know Hixon and Barden have been buried in a stellar Giants WR receiving corps.

This sounds like Marty Hurney. Always looking for wide receivers in the bargain bin instead of spending for real talent.

Our star receiver is 33 years old, and we have inadequate depth who could never be a #1 WR on any roster anywhere.

I think the better question is what makes you have faith in a reciever who's going into his third year in the league and has 42 yards and 1 TD total? And the majority of that is off one catch?

What has burned this franchise for years is filling the roster with late round guys that we hope one day develop and never do(see: every WR we've drafted now named Lafell/Smith, every cornerback convert we drafted and moved to safety etc etc).

Hixon and Barden have both actually produced in the NFL, we can't keep a WR corps with the Armanti Edwards and Pilares of the world, who are average at best KR, and who's career stats combined wihth 5 years combined in the league are less then Barden's one game against us.

Fair enough Pilares' stats suck but I thought he looked decent when given opportunities (I'm including preseason). I'm just sayin I would have liked to see him get a chance to prove himself before being scrapped. And as far as Barden goes I would be wary to judge him on his game against us (which I'm sure everyone is). Lets not forget how good Brady Quinn looked against us.

Well GB, NE and Pitt all seem to be a bit hesitant to drop 1/10 of their salary cap on a single receiver. There is a lot of blame we can place on hurney, especially when it comes to overpaying players, but I don't think its fair to put this on his shoulders when he was in fact following a model that was successful for those organizations.

I also think you made that statement without thinking through the entirety of Hurney's time here. We had a lethal combo between Smith and Moose at one point. We brought in Keyshawn Johnson and got production out of him. We got DJ Hackett who was considered a high ceiling player when we obtained him. We spent 2nd round picks on Keary Colbert and Dwayne Jarret. We also brought Moose back and he was fairly productive.

Just because we weren't successful at hitting on a good solution for WR #2 does not mean we didn't try.

Lets also not forget how the Chiefs were so inspired by the death of their crazy person that they magically managed to play a perfectly clean game with ZERO penalties aside from a late delay of game penalty.

Its not like their oline were literally tackling CJ and hardy to the ground or anything to give quinn a fortnight to get the ball out.

Anyone can follow a model, it doesn't mean they actually have a clue what they're doing.

Funny you mention those three teams, who happen to be among the best in the league. Why is that you think? They build through the draft but actually know how to do it well. Hurney was an absolute disaster outside the 1st round.

Ugh I don't even want to talk about Keyshawn, I hope you don't consider that acquisition a success. Hackett was a disaster. Drew Carter, Keary Colbert, and Dwayne Jarrett, just lol. So that leaves us with Moose, and Steve Smith who Hurney didn't even draft.

If only simply trying yet often failing miserably ever counted for anything right?

Hey here's to better results with Gettleman.

Yes, he's looked good in preseason, but remember he's so far down the depth chart he's playing against a 3rd and 4th string defense that are likely not even on their respective teams anymore. A team can only really afford 1 MAYBE 2 "potential" guys. Right now we have Edwards, Gettis, Murphy, Pilares and Joe Adams as WR who may "potentially" develop. We need to cut this down.

100% hitting the nail on the head. Good post.

Hopefully Gettleman can vastly improve the depth and talent on this roster over the next few seasons...

I thought the Keyshawn acquisition worked out well. We brought him here just to compliment smith; he was productive and didn't cause any issues. In fact I thought cutting him for Jarret was really dumb.

Hackett was a disaster, and a good example why we are hesitant to go after higher profile FAs. He wasn't predicted to be a superstar but many teams were bidding on him and looking at him. Many folks around the league felt he would have been a good target to land.

Carter was only really hyped up by people on this board because of his measureables. He wasn't taken seriously by anyone in the league and was looked at as a 4th stringer at best.

Jarrett was a total bust, but so was just about every skill position player from that USC team. Leinhart, Bush (not a complete bust, but NOWHERE near what he was hyped up to be), Lendale White, Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett... none of them lived up to expectations. However all the Olinemen are doing quite well in the NFL, which goes to show you how much offensive production you can get with an elite Oline and subpar talent at skill positions.

I'm not really sure why Colbert was such a failure. He looked great as a rookie but just never improved.

Look I get that none of these worked out but they weren't stupid decisions. Many experts felt these guys were acquired at good value for us - without reaching or overpaying for - they just ended up being significantly less productive than anyone could have anticipated.

I completely agree with you about offensive linemen.

Forgot about Lendale White. I remember people wanting him over Deangelo Williams, what a great idea.

Sure some of it you can attribute to bad luck but overall he was just not a good GM. What bothers me is when people talk about our receiver depth they always speak as if Steve will just be here forever.

Ramses and Hixon have had success in a highly scrutinized evnironment and that would be good experience to bring in. Not saying they are #1 or #2's but they could bring in good depth and allow for steve and lafell to move around the field.

Edit: the key thing to remember in all of this is that it will be cheap

    • I have nothing against Mike Evans, it's that he keeps saying it's ridiculous for me to think T-Mac will be a better player than Evans, based on Evans totality of his career statistical output. They're not the same thing, at all.  Basically what he's arguing is that it would be insane for someone to say any RB coming into the league is going to be better than Frank Gore.  There are going to be LOTS of RBs over the years who are better than Gore but will never make the HOF.   Or how about comparing a QB to Rivers or Eli?  There are going to be a lot of QBs that you'd predict will be better, and for a period of time will be, but they won't be able to do it long enough to have the same career as those guys. Longevity of great play does not equal an elite player, it equals an elite career.  If you're building a team for one season, health aside and looking at peak performance, there are way too many WRs over the last decade that I'd take over Evans to consider him a true elite WR in my mind. For example, I looked it up, here is where he has finished every season ranked in Receptions and Yards 2014 - 36th in Rec and 19th in Yds 2015 - 30 and 11 2016 - 6 and 4 2017 - 23 and 15 2018 - 17 and 3 2019 - 36 and 13 2020 - 32 and 18 2021 - 28 and 22 2022 - 25 and 13 2023 - 24 and 9 2024 - 28 and 23 He's played 11 seasons, only twice finished higher than 23rd in receptions and 3 times in the Top 10 in yards, 5 of the 11 outside the Top 15.  Outside of 2016 and 2018, he really wasn't ever an elite WR outside of being an elite red zone threat.   Evans was a great WR who had an elite career, not an elite WR
    • I’m not sure what Mike Evans did to offend you but if we draft a WR at 8 that is Mike Evans I think everyone in Carolina would be ecstatic
