Ron Rivera Spoke Today (Hood Hargett Breakfast)

Had an opportunity to go to this event today and Rivera was the keynote.

Nothing earth shattering, but here are some takeaways:

Went through the coaching changes on his staff and praised the work that Jim Skipper had done in the past with Stewart and Williams. Said he was excited to see what these two guys could do next year under Jim. (Led me to believe that there may in fact be some validity to keeping both).

Talked about promoting Shula over the other potential hires (all came down to familiarity with the style and playbook).

Talked about Luke. Said he has only scratched the surface and that the New Linebackers coach from the giants will be charged with taking him to the next level. Said people will be suprised at how good this guy really is when he learns more and gets even better.

Fielded a question about Jon Beason's role. Said Luke will be in the middle and he like Beason and Davis on the outside. Thinks both Beason and Davis have the speed to be impact players from the outside and do great things.

Asked about the direction for the draft. Pretty much covered every postion except QB, RB, and LB. However, he began by discussing the imporatance of the o-line and playmakers on offense (Warmack, Fisher, Patterson, Allen?) Wouldn't mention any names because Joe Person was there (he then proceeded to crack on Joe Person which was pretty funny).

Said Jordan Gross is doing well and had ankle surgery that went well.

Said if you look back to last year we were one yard away in four of our losses (Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago, and Tampa). Was disapointed with the start, but loved the finish. His and his coaching staff's job this year is to figure out a way to come out hot and win early.

Overall, a good humble guy. Mick Mixon was hilarious as well. You can tell Mick is an odd bird, but a very educated and witty one at that

This is how you know Marty Hurney isn't in charge anymore.

"I'm really excited to see what these two guys can do under this coach I fired the second I got here"

Skipper wasn't fired. His contract had expired and Rivera decided on going another direction.

I think he knows now that was a mistake, although it's not like they were terrible under John Settle.

FYI: Settle followed Chudzinski to Cleveland after being let go here.
