Who the Panther are looking to draft

I think we are picking a DT if we haven't signed Canty.

Patterson is gonna be a Jet. They are going to dump Revis on the 49ers (who reportedly don't mind a one year rental), and this will seal Patterson's fate. But...if some way he was still on the board at 14 and we didn't pick him, I'd launch a sponge at my TV. LOL.

The new name that will emerge is Desmond Trufant.

Awesome combine to back up his consistent dominance in the PAC 12.

I have watched no game footage from Trufant from this year. I did however spend a lot of time watching him the previous year and he looked scared of RB's, a little afraid to tackle. Ever notice that?

I have not noticed that yet, it may be due to his size, but his true shutdown abilities over shadow any run support issues. Kinda the same issue with Chris Gamble.

Anyone think Matt Elam will be there for our round 2 selection? I think I like him better than Kenny. If we dont get a safety in the 1st I hope we can get a good one in the second. What do you guys think of Eric Reid? I have really fallen behind this year on doing my research.

They did a draft projection yesterday on NFLN for Baltimore and they had Elam going there in the 2nd. So that would mean he could be available when we pick based on that specific projection.

You must be looking at something different that I am.

Here is a draft which was updated today which shows Warmack at 2, Werner at 5, and Patterson at 10. At our pick we are supposed to take Rhodes at 14. Star is projected at 15 and Vaccaro is 18. So using the BPA philosophy assuming our board looks like theirs, you would pick Warmack first, Werner 2nd, Patterson 3rd. You wouldn't pick Star or Vaccaro because they aren't BPAs.

Here is another from Gil Brandt who is a smart guy. This one has Werner at 2, Warmack at 10, Vacarro at 15, Patterson at 16, and Star is not even in the first round.

In this case it would be Werner hands down with Warmack second. Everyone else wouldn't necessary be BPA and picked by us at all even if available,

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/mock-drafts/gil-brandt/165254

And the problem is that all these drafts and your opinion is based on need not BPA. Why doesn't anyone understand what BPA means. BPA is best player available regardless of need...............

star isn't in the first round because they don't know what is up with his heart, the guy was projected top 5 before the heart issue popped up, it could end up being nothing like it was with Alexander and if so he's top 5.

Drafting BPA is a nice thing to say if you are a team or GM to the fans they want the fans to think "oh our team is set for next year so we can just pick the best player at that spot because we don't have any needs" so they will buy tickets when the next season rolls around. but in reality it's not true, the panthers and any team for that matter are not going to take someone like Geno Smith if he's the BPA and already have a franchise QB it just doesn't work that way, they will pick the BPA to fill one of their needs. And all of those players can be seen to fill a need.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
