Does the 40 yard dash time really matter when it comes to a wide receiver in the nfl?

Combine is good for seeing how a guy will prep in a real world situation. If a guy won't train hard for the combine, what's he going to do when you give him a couple million.

But the man had to run a 4.3 when he was at his peak on gameday. You also have to look at quickness, route running, acceleration, seperation when the ball is in the air which Steve does probably better than anyone in the league

To me 40 yard dashes only matter for deep threats if you asking to run all the way out and we gonna throw it deep to you. We have Gettis for that. What's the percentage of those working in the playoffs though

40 time is good because you get all the splits. The 10 20 and 40 give you a good understanding of what you're seeing on tape.

Tells you if a guy is indecisive/not knowledgeable or just has good instincts.

Do you think Teo was hurt by a slow time or did it just confirm what folks saw on the field. Most folks project him in the second round. Someone on total access said he wasn't a high first rounder like Beason was. Said Beason was better coming out of college.

Not only is the 40 time deceptive, but the raw speed it is meant to measure is generally pointless.

It is done without pads or a helmet so it does a poor job at mimicking game pace. Also how often do players get to run 40 yards without having to make any cuts or moves? That's a pretty rare occurrence. Sure it makes sense for guys who are going to be returning kickoffs and punts and maybe deep ball receivers, but even for them that is rare.

Pretty much. Precious little in the combine means anything at all as far as performance on a football field. The combine is pointless really, it meant something 30 years ago when every team didn't know everything about every player. In the computer/internet age the combine is archaic. It has some benefit for sure but the tests and measurements are silly.

The NFL is so hidebound and slow to change that it's comical. For years the powers in the NFL poo poo'd college/spread offenses, now they all incorporate it to some degree. Only in the last few years has the NFL let go of the ingrained prototype of the NFL quarterback. You know, they have to be 6 feet x inches tall and weigh x pounds, be a pocket passer and come from a college program that runs a pro set. Stupid, stupid poo that everybody but the NFL knew was wrong. The list goes on and on but the dog and pony show that is the combine keeps on keeping on.
