Scary stuff man! I didn't hear about the debris flying into the crowd until I got home tonight. Heard over 15 people were being carried away on stretchers.

This has happened before, last time it was Edwards at dega, another super speedway where they require restrictor plates.

There's just no way to guarantee that ANY car will not get airborne under those circumstances. They changed the aero package again because people were bitching about the two car tandem drafting, so now we get the pack racing and the 'big one' again. It's not the new cars, it's happened with just about every generation of stock cars they've ran, from Petty to Allison, Edwards, and now this.

Yeah, don't blame the type of car. Simple aerodynamics. Vehicles flying at 200 MPH will catch some air if the are hit in the right spot at the right time in the right conditions. Unfortunate, but the risk you take. Scary part for me was seeing where the wreck started. I sat 4 rows up in the same spot (just before the dog-leg) at Dega a few years ago. Same thing could have happened there. This sucks, but it happens every once in a while. You gotta know when you buy the tickets that you're taking rubber from the tires to the face all damn race...and if a wreck occurs...you could catch bigger debris.

If they were smart, they included something in the ticket buying process that said "watch at your own risk" or some such warning just in case something like this occurred.

Whether or not they're smart...unknown.

Every sporting event ticket has a disclaimer on it. Including NASCAR tickets.

They do, but often the language is unenforceable for various reasons. It's not really a contract if both sides don't give up something. And gross negligence can't be undone by a disclaimer.

Lowe's paid out 10's of millions in settlements after the bridge collapse (I think). I'm sure Daytona will happily settle behind the scenes.

I read some of the history of fan injuries in racing today. Some years ago at Le Mans, 83 spectators were killed when one of the cars went into the crowd. I don't think anything like that could happen at a NASCAR race, generally the circle tracks are much safer than road courses. But although safety is a lot better today than it was then, but they still have to make some improvements.

    • No team in the league would sit back and say Mays outplayed Hunt or Lewis so its a typical case of stats (or ratings) not telling the story. The team also was in a much better position at the end of the year, where the begging was very rough all around. Everyone was learning the new scheme, calls, learning how new teammates played in real games and all of that changed the second half of the year. We started getting actual production from the run game and receivers and everyone’s play changed from the beginning of the year.   As a side note Mays goes down or another linemen who is coming in? We have zero depth and Brady Christiansen will be hitting free agency to be a starter elsewhere.  With as many holes as we have it makes sense as long as it’s team friendly deal. I’m not opposed to drafting someone as well, but we know what we are getting from Corbett when healthy and he’s above average playing multiple positions. Maybe they have it as an open competition between him and Mays, loser is the prime backup for G and C
