Playstation Officially Announces PS4

Being that the PS3 is one of the main reasons Blu Ray won the format war, and will in turn lead to Sony and other companies receiving royalties for Microsoft using Blu Ray in their NG console I would say it has something to do with the PS3. Also, since when was having a larger install base worldwide deemed a huge mistake. FACT: The PS3 has surpassed the 360 in console sales. The 360 had a year head start, but every full year both consoles have been out the PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide. That is far from a huge mistake....

fair enough... i don't think the ps3 was a mistake by any means... sony did make some mistakes initially but as you pointed out, they've recovered... That said, i'm not sure that the ps3 had as big an affect on the format war as you're saying, though i don't know and it certainly is possible.

you are missing the forest for the trees, my point was that how Sony handled the PS3 was a mistake and even Sony would say as much now, the fact that they are already launching a PS4 is all the proof I need of this. They released the ps3 too late and for too much, they messed it up so bad they almost put themselves out of business.

So they almost put themselves out of business yet sold more units then their main competition? If that sounds confusing it should, and before you call me a PS fanboy I have all three consoles and a Wii U....

When it was released, it was by far the cheapest Blu Ray player on the market. It was a difference of about 400 dollars in most cases. Also, the PS3 made it possible for Blu Ray to be put in homes where it wouldn't likely be otherwise. It was a HUGE factor in the format war between Blu Ray and HD-DVD

no need for me to do it you went ahead and outed yourself, lol. I personally dont care about brands at all, used to be all about it when I was 15, but not anymore. been wanting to buy a PS3 for a while now, just have had better things to do with the money then video games I've only bought 2 games in the last 2 years(ME3 and Halo 4).

with all that said revisionist history is a hell of a thing

if you want more articles then that one Just google "Sony losses PS3" there are tons of them also 1up.com is what used to be Electronic Gaming Monthly what used to be the best gaming mag out there before Game Informer partnered with Gamestop and effectively put them out of Business.

They went into this cycle knowing they were going to lose money because they were selling a console that was almost 1000 dollars to produce for 600. When you're selling your console at a huge loss for a year or more of course you're going to lose money. Again, I'm not seeing how outperforming your biggest competition when they had a year head start can be viewed as a huge mistake. Did they take risks, of course, but obviously they were good decisions. The sales figures speak for themselves....

I'm interested in the PS4 now, I have to admit. But, I don't know if it's because of Sony or if it's because the rumors of the Kinect coming packaged with the next Xbox and maybe having a direct connection/interface with the machine. I don't like that. I want a machine that is a true media center/console. And with the potential of the Gaikai streaming service, and what that could become... Wow. That could change the face of console gaming.

Some things that worry me though, are that there was no mention of blu-ray. I really want blu-ray on the next system. Yes, I already have a blu-ray system, but I would like to get another, but I don't want to have to buy a new one, when I could have it on the system (plus the increase in storage space on the discs).

However, the fact that Mark Cerny is involved is huge for me. That guy is a video game genius. If Sony is smart, at E3 they will just let Mark Cerny speak for the entirety of the press conference (other than the video game previews, of course).

The PS4 has a 6X BD drive built in. It's on one of the spec sheets....

Here it is....

Sony also lost money because of the r&d for the cell. Selling more hardware and software then your direct competition is nothing but a success. They've also made a ton of that money back in the last 2-3 years. Add to that a year less on the market and you can't say Sony wasn't successful with the Ps3.

As someone that owned both a 360 and PS3, I much, much preferred the 360. The PS4 looks good, but it has me excited to see what MS will do within the coming months. That being said, I hope that all the new hardware doesn't perpetuate the focus on having the best graphics over the best game play that seemingly plauged the industry this generation.

Same here, I have both systems and rarely use my PS3. pretty much just for movies at this point and MLB the show
