Colts not interested in re-signing Dwight Freeney

So I guess when Pagano was giving his emotional speech and said "hoist that Lombardi [Trophy] several times." He really meant, "Not with you Dwight".

.

Owner Jim Irsay gushed about Freeney in a release confirming the move, saying that “[f]ew people have meant as much to the success of the Indianapolis Colts as Dwight Freeney,” that “[h]e has been a dominant player,” and that he “was an artist, a joy to watch, and the dedication he put toward his craft was a rare quality.”

Irsay also said that Freeney will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.

Yeah, bullshyt Isray.

I hope when the time comes the Panthers treat Steve Smith better.

it was the right move. I'd rather the organization did stuff like that than throw money at players like they have.

an inferior site had an article today comparing what we did to what the colts did and i have to say i agree.

I hear ya, but Freeney comes long after their purge was completed and they have huge Cap Room this year.

What Hurney's incompetence has done took years to do, the Colts have been run very well for years so I see little comparison there.

an inferior site is simply using 20/20 hindsight to make a point, but the water is under the bridge.

The Panther FO has been incompetent for years, the Colts have not been.

Retaining Freeney would be a good jesture for the long term Colt Fans, he's not going to demand a big contract at 32.

If after the 2014 season Gettleman has this team in the right direction, coming off a Playoff run and have over 40 million in Cap Space I'll be pissed if Smitty spends his final 2 years in the League catching the rock for Matt Ryan out of the slot.

That's what we're talking about, a small gesture for the fans, the team and a class player.

Not what Marty Hurney should have been doing the last decade.

Just had to throw in this little gem from Cat Scratch Reader on their thoughts on the Stewart contract:

After looking at the numbers I think it's a pretty genius contract that keeps low liability for the organization.

The 5-year contract weighs in at $37.811 million, with $23 million guaranteed.

2012: $2.98 million base ($4.78 million cap hit)

2013: $1 million base ($2.8 million cap hit)

2014: $9 million option/roster bonus $1.5 million base ($5.5 million cap hit)

2015: $4.25 million base ($9.8 million cap hit)

2016: $5.5 million base ($8.5 million cap hit)

It's truly a beautifully constructed deal that keeps Stewart's cap number extremely manageable until the 2015 season, where like DeAngelo Williams it's likely the Panthers will explore a re-structuring.

Just a year ago an inferior site thought Hurney was genius. bth_emoticon_laughing.gif

You just cant make this stuff up:

For now, however, there's no point in worrying about Carolina's cap situation long-term, because we've been guaranteed another five years of stiff arms, gifs and plays from a man who has been a class act since arriving in Carolina.

The timing of the deal is wholly reminiscent of Ryan Kalil, whose contract was reached late in training camp too. This will ensure the Panthers already potent offense remains so for a long time. Congratulations to Jonathan Stewart for his new deal, and a much deserved pay day!

And now it's:

.

Partly through need, and partly through fear -- the Carolina Panthers spent all their cap room. The bang for their buck? A middle linebacker who's missed two straight seasons, a center who went on IR, two running backs who barely eclipsed 1,000 yard combined

A team should just stick with a veteran player until they decide to retire?

The Colts want to move on. You don't hold on to players that can't find a place on the team.

Linville George is right. Jerry Hughes and and Mathis are much better fits in the 3-4 at OLB according to everything I have read and saw when reviewing numerous different detailed snaps at PFF.

Secondly, Smith will probably not be here for more than 2 years. His base salary is fully guaranteed through the end of the 2014 season and he would be 36 come the 2015 season. I just don't see him hanging around that long.

Freeney will be fine, get to go back to being a DE and probably actually prefer's playing time than riding the pine just to retire a Colt.

    • No team in the league would sit back and say Mays outplayed Hunt or Lewis so its a typical case of stats (or ratings) not telling the story. The team also was in a much better position at the end of the year, where the begging was very rough all around. Everyone was learning the new scheme, calls, learning how new teammates played in real games and all of that changed the second half of the year. We started getting actual production from the run game and receivers and everyone’s play changed from the beginning of the year.   As a side note Mays goes down or another linemen who is coming in? We have zero depth and Brady Christiansen will be hitting free agency to be a starter elsewhere.  With as many holes as we have it makes sense as long as it’s team friendly deal. I’m not opposed to drafting someone as well, but we know what we are getting from Corbett when healthy and he’s above average playing multiple positions. Maybe they have it as an open competition between him and Mays, loser is the prime backup for G and C
