Thinking about selling everything I own and moving to Hawaii

I wouldn't go to Honolulu because it really is nothing special compared to coastal spots in the continental US. Maybe Maui but I've been there 3 times and would run out of things to do if I was living there. Also, it is expensive as hell.

Costa Rica and Nicaragua are good options imo.

I'm familiar with islands and I would feel uncomfortable going to a non English speaking country.

Might be moving there myself in about 2 years. It's expensive too, but at least you have an entire continent. I think I'd feel too confined in a place like Hawaii.

Dont come out here without a job and dont sell your things just yet.

You can rent a room for $600 a month and get by. But the job part is going to be the hardest part. Either have one when you come out here or have plenty of money to live here a month without one.

Moved out here a year ago had the job already and 3 days paid by the company hotel. While it is somewhat expensive it isnt bad. houisng is expensive, milk eggs and gas are expensive and eating out is expensive. The rest isnt bad price wise.

Good part of Hawaii is the weather bad parts is to many people,rent and if you want to go anywhere is cost money. Plus the traffic worse traffic jams in the US.

So if you just want a change I wouldnt suggest it, there is cheaper places to live.

You live in Socal? Tickets will cost you $500. Not as bad as living on the east coast and coming out here.

Also forgot to add most people that move out here leave in 6 months because they cant handle being this far away or they just dont like it. You can only go to the beach so many times.

Personally would have no problem retiring in Hawaii, it's on the list of possible destianations.

Yeah was just talking about Oahu. My pan is to buy a piece of land on the other islands and build something there. Longterm plan will be about 10 years before I have it all done.

This isn't a joke thread. This a thought I've been pondering for sometime but it's very hard to discuss pros and cons with anyone because I don't want to let my friends/family know that's what I'm up to.

Don't get me wrong, I love where I live right now, but I've had a lot of personal and living arrangement issues recently and it's all becoming very hard to afford a comfortable life.

So what do you guys think? Would this be a dumb move? I'm still very young and haven't chosen a career path. I just really feel like getting away and living a different life for a while.

If you are having trouble affording a comfortable life where you are, moving to Hawai might not be the answer.

They have a lot of poverty there and it is crazy expensive. My sister lives there and she could not believe how expensive it was.....her husband is a Colonel and pilot in the Air Force.

Yeah I'm in SoCal so it wouldn't be too bad, but like you said I would have to find a steady paying job and I'm still young so that could be harder than I thought. Definitely don't know if I could find something to pay 600 a month...

A lot of people have to work 2 jobs to afford to live out here. Im lucky as I only need the one. But they also pick up a 2nd just because it can get boring after awhile. Also to meet new people.

I've thought about doing something like this after my undergrad years.

My grandfather takes his boat down from Connecticut to the Bahamas every year alone, and he says he meets all kinds of young people down there with the same ideas that you're showing right now.

They just needed to get away, even if just for some time, so they saved up some money, bought a boat that they could live on, and went out there. Doesn't necessarily mean you need to live on a boat, but that general idea sounds awesome.

No worries, maybe just work a job at a marina or a bar or something on some small island that isn't crowded with tourists.

Good luck though son, I'd like to hear how that goes if you follow through.

Yeah I dont want to discourage you from trying it. If it is something you want to do defiantly do it. Just have a plan in place if you want to get back to SoCal.

i have been having the itch to move as well. just extremely bored on so many levels. sometimes you can change your attitude by changing your latittude.

but if i do move. its either near the ocean or New Mexico.
