Is this an awesome idea or a very very very terrible idea?

Specialized sector of real estate. Been doing it for almost 10 years now.

Fell into it, but it is and will be great for my family.

i'll be going into academia more than likely, so it's a safe bet my daily attire will be long sleeved collared shirts... which would cover the tattoo without a problem

  • 1 year later...

I have a hard time getting something permanent on me because I know I'm willing to change just about anything with good reason.

Maybe start small don't go all out sleeve, also I'm personally not a fan of color in tattoos on white skins. Just my opinion, good luck.

welp i pulled the trigger. i'm doing an all-day session may 9 to get the entire thing outlined, then going back at the end of the month to get color in. full sleeve.

I saw your fb post about this... you got a pic or description of what you're doing?

I want one too, but haven't done anything about it.

really it's no different than as described in the OP. dude is doing mockups of it this week and i'll give him feedback on spatial orientation, composition, and stylization of important elements. i'll post pics after the first session, but it won't be in all its glory until i get color in.

it'll be done in a lithographic style, kraken/octopus/giant squid (whatever combination of them looks the best) on my forearm attacking a masted ship from the depths of the sea, tentacles attacking the ship and surrounding my arm, entwined with other nautically-themed elements. the tattoo is fraught with meaning: in the 19th and early 20th century the spate of nautical literature from the u.s. and britain often employed the sea as its own character, a literary device that underscored the helplessness of man as he launched forward on his ventures and conquests and explorations. meaning, the french existentialist albert camus would note some time later, is bound to struggle: this to me is one of the central attractions to travel, as i have experienced it: launching ahead into the unknown, struggling with danger and the raw wonder of new encounter, at the mercy of circumstances which befall you, largely beyond your own control or volition.

it's something i've put a great amount of thought into and it's something that speaks volumes to me and transcends something that i just think is cool when i'm in my 20s.

i've been thinking about getting tats since i was 20. that was almost 9 years ago. i always hesitated to pull the trigger because even then in the midst of my singlemindedness i recognized that i might find a tattoo stupid in ten years and regret it. for this reason even religious tattoos, fundamental to my identity, seemed like a bad idea (for stylistic reasons, not ideological ones.)

however, approaching 30, well past the days of youth and immaturity when i'd get one just to get one, and being honestly perfectly content to never get one (as pstall said there's an appeal in knowing you can always get one later) i can credit my decision to something greater than the whims of a fool. the concept is something that i feel is transcendent, fundamental to the human experience, and at the end of the day, no matter what changes, i will always love 19th century nautical literature. so at its worst it's a homage to the sea wolf and moby dick and the other classics that've informed my insatiable desire for adventure and exploration and at best it's a portrait of the human experience that speaks to my soul.

win-win

Frankly that sounds awesome and fitting with your travels etc.  Good luck.

My idea revolves around imagery from a series of books I've read several times and love.

I wouldn't want a full sleeve, just like the upper arm.

My wife surprised me greatly this weekend when she said she decided she wants one (she's always been staunchly against tats).  She wants some angel wings or something similar with our middle son's (who passed when he was born) d.o.b. on them.

I had a dream when I was 17 that I got a huge colorful tattoo of an upside down Scooby Doo on my calf, I was so relieved when I woke up that it was a dream I vowed I would never get a tattoo. Any time I consider it,  I remember that dream and all consideration is gone.

I love me some Scooby Doo cartoons but it would ruin my legs!

There was a waitress at Ale House Saturday night and she had what appeared to be a Native American themed tat on the back of her left leg (up high, she had on short shorts) with like a "tail" running down the back of her leg...

Good lord it was hot.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
