Is Our Fanbase Predisposed to "Fairweather-ism"?

Consider this: The Carolina Hurricanes moved to NC in 1997 (two years after the Panthers) and they consistently have one of the better crowds in the NHL. The teams logically should be sharing the fan base so what is the difference between the two?

Is this because of small stadiums? Cheaper beer? Or just different type of fans?

Winning the Stanley cup, playing in another, and consistently being pretty good year in year out doesn't hurt either.

This is one of those things that takes time. I have never followed another team in my life, but I grew up with the Panthers. If you think about it, people 30 and below are the only ones who have "grown up" with the Panthers and we are usually not at a point in our lives where we can afford tickets (or afford to miss work/ family time). I think over the next 10-20 years, as this new generation of Panther fan reaches 40-50 years of age, we will be able to afford to spend money on games.

It also doesn't hurt if you make the playoffs every now and again

sports is just not in their blood like banking and religion.

You are in the heart of basketball country....so you comment that sports is not in their blood is ridiculous. The issue with the Bobcats are two fold:

1. Many in Charlotte still hate the NBA because of the whole George Shinn fiasco

2. The Bobcats are a losing team with a roster void of significant talent

Excuses. Charlotte fans need to man up. It's pathetic. We are one of the worst sports fan bases in the country.

Look at the posters on this board if you want to know what is wrong.

Over react and bitch about everything.

But that being said......people forget that Charlotte IS a transplant city. The majority of people here grew up fans of other teams. And, many of them do not change those allegiances just because they moved.

Winning is what will breed interest from that fan base....winning is what will incent someone to change allegiances.

One of the worst fan bases for the worst NBA team in the history of the league.....a match made in heaven.

Add a fan base that soured on the NBA becasue of the Shinn ordeal to a franchise (Bobcats) that have been pathetic their entire existence and you get what we have.
