Everything you need to know about our cap, potential cuts and free agents.

I agree with all your cap numbers except for Nakamura's. Pat Y in his ESPN article a month or so ago said the Panthers could save $1.8m by cutting him:

Trying to figure out what the discrepancy is. Of course, wouldn't be surprised if Pat Y is just flat out wrong.

He also references $136M committed vs $131M above. That $5M is a huge difference.

Heres my personal proposal on how we should create room to sign the rookies, resign a few vets and add some depth in free agency. All in all I say we need roughly 25 million to meet this goal.

Ok so heres my immediate cuts(non june 1st designations).

Gamble- saves 8.95 million

Ron Edwards- saves 2.5 million

Gary Williams- saves 1.25 million

Nakumara- saves 967,000

these moves here would save us a total of 13.677 million with roughly another 12 million still needed for the rookies, re-signing's and adding some free agents for depth.

I would also part ways with Beason as a june 1st cut and that would save an additional 3.5 million. Now that leaves us 8.5 million short of our overall goal.

Next up on the list is Gross. I'd get him to restructure. Because if we cut him he gets zip, 0, zilch. Then has to go find a new team and see what they are willing to pay him. Last year Eric Winston got a 4 year 22 million dollar deal with the chiefs. That leads me to believe we can get Gross on about a 3 year 16 million deal roughly. If we structure it right we can save about 6 million off his cap figure of 10.7 million.

That leaves us 2.5 million over where we need to be. I'd look to someone like Deangelo Williams to restructure or face being cut. As I alluded to earlier cutting him is not ideal right now from a fiscal sense when thinking about the future but it would save us 3.4 against the cap if we did it as a June 1st cut. So he could restructure and save us the necessary money or get cut. I'd prefer the restructure route for now but if push comes to shove then we can cut him.

Ok so if my hypothetical scenario plays out then the following players will either be replaced by another vet or a rookie draft pick.

under contract currently

Gamble,Gary Williams,Beason,Nakumara,Ron Edwards and possibly a few other lower tier backups not because of money but because of talent or inability to get on field such as Gettis.

Free agents we let walk

Applewhite, Louis Murphy,Mike Pollack, Gary Barndige,Sherrod Martin, Ben Hartstock,Derek Anderson,Richie Brockel.

Free agents we retain

Dwan Edwards,Jason Phillips, Captain, and Nate Ness.

This will leave us looking for help at DT,WR,0-line depth,Secondary depth/vet leadership, backup QB AND TE via the draft and bargain bin of free agency.

Pretty reasonable plan. I've also heard some discussion of us being able to basically "Opt out" of the Deangelo Williams deal like the Eagles can with Vick. Has there been anymore reporting on that, or is that something that Gannt or somebody just made up?

We are going into 2013 with a downgraded coaching staff and roster.

Thats all you really need to know. lol

It may not be as bad as you think. Beason won't sting so much if we cut him, thanks to Luke. We have some promising young guys who can step up in place of Gamble if we cut him. Ron Edwards can't be missed too much as he was always just a stop gap and only played 1 year.

Then pending where go in the draft and cheap vets we will have an upgrade at DT,WR,O-line depth and possibly FS(Whether thats Campbell improving and keeping the starting job or draft pick or better vet than Nakumara and Martin out there.)

As far as the coaching staff goes, I wanted Rivera gone as much as anyone but that ship has sailed and all we can do is hope that its starting to click for him in year 3. Also Shula is a wildcard but its not like Chud did us any favors with his horrid play calling last year.

In 2014 we can bow out of the D-will deal, save money and not carry over dead money into 2015.
