Thanks for this link. I have not seen this before. If we cut Gamble, we have room. Gettlemen is my hero.

I expect us to cut a few more smaller contracts (Garry Williams, etc) and restructure a few more (Gross), so we could be about $12 million below soon.

Wow, so this is how a real franchise is run...

Honestly think if one of the top 3 LTs fall to the Panthers in the draft, Gross becomes expendable. That frees up a ton of cash.

Gamble can't stay healthy, time to move on. Paid too much to be on IR every year. Frees up another boatload of cap space.

Beason needs to stay healthy this year or be let go. It's that simple. If he doesn't start 12-14 games in 2013, he should either take a pay cut or the Panthers need to move on. He hasn't taken enough snaps to justify this amount of money.

And mind you, I love the 3 players above. But time to start running this thing like a real franchise. I'm cautiously optimistic for the future...

The Panthers reworked S Haruki Nakamura's contract so that he's now only signed through 2013.

The sides ripped up Nakamura's old three-year, $4.8 million deal, and he essentially now has a brand-new one-year, $815,000 contract with $300,000 more available in incentives. He got a $65,000 signing bonus. Nakamura isn't assured of a roster spot, but he now has the contract of a strict special teamer.

I think you misread my post. Even so, it seems that you mocked my comments and assumed that I was trying to run a franchise. I was simply referencing expected moves. Then you proceed to tell me how to run a franchise. Thanks. Now I know how to run a franchise. Ii hope I did not misread your comments by interpreting them as sarcasm. Since neither of us is actually a GM, there is no need to pretend we know more than anyone else.

I disagree with you about Gross. If you sign Johnson (OT), you would only create about $6 million in cap space by cutting one of the top LTs in the NFL (top third). You would be going with a rookie at LT and you would still have Bell at RT. Not good. Bell is suspect against speed rushers and he is poor as a run blocker. He graded out as the second worst RT in the NFL. Why would you not upgrade him instead of Gross? Money?

What you do is this: Restructure Gross, play Johnson at RT for a year. You upgrade both tackle positions if compared to your situation.

I suggested cutting Gamble. Beason does not need to be given more guaranteed money (restructured) or extended. He has injuries that are concerns and he is not that valuable as an OLB. He is untradeable now--maybe in a year, we can get a pick for him.

If Cam Newton is the frachise and our hopes of winning are on his shoulders, protecting him has to be the team's top priority. A rookie LT and Bell at RT does not do that. Gross at LT and a stud, young RT who is learning the ropes so he can one day move to the left side is smarter to me. If you consider saving money by cutting Gross, if you restructure by guaranteeing money, then you actually save only about $3-$4 million---not worth risking Cam's health.

MHS, I wasn't mocking you or being sarcastic. Actually excited the team is making smart moves that anticipate future financial impacts. Instead of living year to year.

I like your approach in general, though I still feel Gross could be replaced by a less expensive player - preferably a top rookie, teams do it every year. Not trying to be cheap or jeopardize Cam's health, just think it's time to replace an aging expensive vet with a young competent talent. But I do admit that I'm the last person to run a franchise. I obviously don't put in the time or effort to evaluate talent that real GMs do. Just the general fan perspective.

Oh, then I apologize Navy. We get a lot of trolling on here, and I read your response the wrong way. Thanks for the feedback.

I once was an advocate of cutting Gross and Gamble and retooling with youth, but I dhanged about Gross.

I used to live in Annapolis. Wrote for the Capital newspaper for about a year just out of college.

I was once against Gross being a cap casualty, but if a top LT can be acquired via the draft I think it's a move that will benefit the team in the future. Gross is a pretty good LT, but his price tag is not justified by his play. Maybe if he'll agree to less money...

As much as I'd like a new LT prospect I think it's mistake to let Gross go, not yet anyway. Cam will get blasted in a scenario without Gross, rookie or no rookie. I'd like for us to get a guy that Gross could help groom.

need to start telling players to take pay cuts instead of restructure.

Other teams have.Its a flat cap year.The teams that have cap always have cap so they are not spending.Other teams are trying to lock up their most valuable players.
