Panthers have an extra 3.6 Million in Cap Space Available to carry Over to 2013

So how about it JR?.

Anyone aware of the current plan if any for this available cap relief?

[Editor's note: The 2011 labor deal allows teams to carry over unused salary-cap space. Or to not carry it over. Listed below is the cap adjustment that is available to each team. Unless otherwise noted, the entire amount comes from available cap money that can be carried over. The Cowboys and Redskins have net cap reductions based on $5 million and $18 million in cap penalties, respectively, for the 2013 league year. These numbers do not reflect cap space but the amount of extra (or for the Cowboys and Redskins reduced) cap space over (or below) the unadjusted cap number, which is expected to be in the vicinity of $121 million per team.]

Eagles: $23.0 million.

Jaguars: $21.1 million ($19.5 million carryover).

Browns: $14.3 million.

Broncos: $14.1 million ($11.5 million carryover).

Chiefs: $14.0 million.

Seahawks: $13.2 million.

Titans: $12.8 million.

Bengals: $10.2 million ($8.5 million carryover).

Buccaneers: $10.1 million ($8.5 million carryover).

Bills: $9.8 million.

Vikings: $9.6 million ($8 million carryover).

Packers: $7.0 million.

Patriots: $5.6 million.

Dolphins: $5.3 million.

Raiders: $4.5 million.

Panthers: $3.6 million.

Cardinals: $3.6 million.

12.4 million. Still need to get under to pay the rooks coming in. We'll barely be breaking even if we cut certain players.

If the $136mil quote for our salary obligations is correct, expected $121mil cap + $3.6mil carryover = $11.4mil over. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere the rookie salaries come out of a separate pool of money that doesn't get factored into our cap (part of the new rookie salary cap stuff in the new CBA).

edit: I did some research, and found that it's not as simple as I was thinking. To sum it up, not all of your draft picks' salaries count against the cap, some of them will (the first round pick most likely, and maybe some of the others depending on the rest of your team's players' salaries). Here's the most thorough explanation I found, I'm assuming it's accurate.

Draft picks are handled just like everyone else with one exception. Until they sign their deal, they count at the rookie minimum. Once the deal is signed, their number is adjusted.

When people talk about the rookie cap, it is often misunderstood to be separate from the salary cap. All the rookie cap does is place a limit on how much teams can spend on their rookies (in practice, their draft picks as UDFA's have no impact due to the rule of 51), but drafted players still have to fit under the same overall salary cap.

Well if nothing else that can help tide us over by not counting as much until after June 1st when we can potentially clear up some more.

The salary obligation is $136 million but that includes all contracts. Only the top 53 count towards the cap which means we are only looking at about $132 million. Now factor in the carry over and we are around $128. That's only $7 million over the expected cap of $121 million. Cutting Gamble alone would get us under the cap.

Hurney gave out some really dumb contracts but he had been doing that for years. He always was able to manipulate the cap numbers to his favor fairly easily. If Gettleman wants to he can fairly easily get to about $25 million under the cap.

I wouldn't worry about much about the cap unless you are around 20 Million over. You can restructure a couple deals and get there pretty easily. It's not exactly a real tough negotiation in the NFL. "Hey, do you want to take a 2 million pay cut for the team? Or get cut, sell your house, move your family, and then hope to sign a deal where you can get back a fraction of what you lost?"

Not so fast my friend. That 136 is reportedly for the guys we have signed for next year, and I doubt we have 53 players signed for 2013. Just off the top of my head, FA's include Dwan E., Jordan S., Gary Barnidge, D. Anderson, R. Brockel, A. Applewhite, B. Hartsock, and the Captain.

And by the way, this time of year only the top 51 count against the cap. All 53 count just before the start of the regular season.
