Chris Canty being cut by the New York Giants changes everything for me. In my opinion, this guy is a must get for us. Whether or not it happens is another thing. Anyways, here is a mock offseason I would be in favor of seeing.

Release:

Chris Gamble - CB is a need for this team even with Gamble still on the roster. However, due to Hurney's spending spree we are unable to keep him. There is too much money in his contract. This is a no-brainer.

Ron Edwards - Has been a disappointment and we can do better.

Haruki Nakamura - He sucks. End of story.

Resign:

Captain Munnerlyn - As much as I'd like to see him go, with the release of Gamble we will need to see Captain return. Hopefully we can bring in 1 or 2 more guys and allow Captain to play the nickel.

Jordan Senn - Works hard, solid on STs, and will be cheap. I'd like to see him stay.

Restructure:

Jon Beason - He has been injured almost every game since he signed his monster deal. He will also be moving to the outside where he is less effective (still very good, though). These 2 details leave Beason very little leverage with his new GM. I fully expect this to happen.

Jordan Gross - He is aging and his performance is declining. Gross knows his days are numbered and should be willing to restructure his deal in order to stay (and to help his team).

Trade:

DeAngelo Williams - As much as I'd love to see him in the category above, I highly doubt it will happen. Williams is still a solid back but we are in cap trouble and he is expendable.

New York Jets get: DeAngelo Williams, 6th round pick

Carolina Panthers get: 3rd round pick

Free Agency:

Chris Canty, DT

It almost makes too much sense. Grew up in Charlotte, brought into New York by Gettleman, and plays at a position of need. He would without a doubt be an upgrade over Edwards. Having Canty with CJ and Hardy would be so awesome.

Chris Houston, CB

Not a flashy signing but a solid one. Houston ranks as a top 25 CB according to PFF (which I think is reliable). I don't anticipate him getting huge offers so hopefully we make a run at him.

Patrick Chung, S

This signing wouldn't make headlines but he is better than Martin and would probably cost us about the same. Let Martin walk and bring in Chung.

Brian Hartline, WR

Hartline is another guy that I think we can get at a decent price.

Draft:

Round 1: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State

Hankins is a monster but may not be available at #14. If he is, I'd love to draft him and pair him beside Canty to complete our DL. The starting 4 would be very lethal, in my opinion.

Round 2: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State

Rhodes across from Houston with Captain at nickel would be a fresh, new look for our secondary.

Round 3: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M

Excellent slot receiver. Would be a nice weapon in our offense. Adding Swope and Hartline would take pressure off Smitty and LaFell and open up the passing game. Factor in Olsen and the passing game looks promising.

Round 4: Ryan Otten, TE, San Jose State

Otten is huge (6' 6") and put up some solid numbers this past season (52 receptions, 740 yards, 5 TDs) and is also a pretty good blocker. Another weapon for Cam.

Round 5: Omoregie Uzzi, OG, Georgia Tech

Uzzi will probably be in every mock I do. I really want him.

Round 6 (comp): Shaq Wilson, OLB, South Carolina

Shaq is a very talented player. He is undersized (5' 11") but plays aggressive and is fast. He is also an extremely hard worker. 86 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 FF, and 2 INTs last season. He would be a solid depth guy and a great addition to our STs coverage.

Round 6 (comp): Dustin Hopkins, K, Florida State

He's a kicker.

I know it looks like we wouldn't be able to afford all of those signings but with the cuts/trades/restructures we should have some wiggle room and I don't anticipate those 4 being expensive. On top of all of this, I'd expect the team to get a couple fillers for the depth on the OL as well as a backup QB.

plus, you're not going to fix all of our problems in one offseason. this gives us balance and depth while leaving room to build.

Like I said in the original post, we would have some veteran depth filler guys on OL. The next offseason is when we'd go for serious OL upgrades.

Should have elaborated earlier. My glass is less than half full on this one. Hankins might be a good eventually but not a big fan as he is overrated.. Rhodes would be a good get inthe 2nd if available. The WR has potential and will most likely sit on the sideline and have potential with the likes of Gettis, Adams, Edwards, Pilares. The TE replaces Barnidge in the stat column. Uzzi is a good get and by far the bright spot IMO. Wilson could be a sleeper or be inactive for most of the season. Might as well take a kicker with the last pick. Cant get much worse.

Some of the offseason moves are pretty good and the pick ups are good but I dont see any long term help. Agree that there is no silver bullet (or bowling ball in this case) that can solve all the problems.

didn't think you were being a jerk or anything.

we could go in a lot of different directions this offseason. my goal in this mock was to try and bring fresh faces to important positions. the FA signings aren't flashy and wouldn't get much attention but it definitely makes us a better team.

Canty plays UT, Hankins plays NT. Side by side they'd be very effective.

Plus, the SB team had a nasty DL. I want that again.

Hartline isn't the answer at WR but he is an upgrade. He will hold us over until we can make a serious upgrade there (maybe Nicks next offseason?).

Same thing with Chung. Not a long term answer but will hold us over until we make a serious upgrade.

We can't fix everything right away. This mock give us depth at most positions and let's us build with draft picks.

I'd love that offseason. fuging love it. I'm a fan of Hankins and our front four of CJ, Canty, Hankins, and Hardy would easily rival our '03/04 line in my opinion. This didnt address #1 WR or oline much, but it'd be enough to get us through to next year.

only 1 sack okay ........... and 4 tackles for losses for hankins......

i like for my dt to have tackles for losses because it shows they getting penetration..

you need someone to get pressure from inside so you can force the qb outside to the DE.

kwan short is better for that. 16 tackles for loss and 7 sacks.......over 20 backfield disruptions.
