Countdown to Free Agency

Speaking of a bargain pickup, any thoughts on Titus Young? Just released from Detroit. The guy's a malcontent, but maybe a change of scenery, a more disciplined coaching staff (I'd like to think our coaching staff is more disciplined than Detroit's), and most importantly, the threat of Smitty chewing his ass out might help him shape up. Guy's a former second round pick whose contract runs through 2014 and is only owed a measly $550k next year. Might be worth a look.

I thought Wahle was good, just not worth what he was getting paid.

Honestly, that's a phrase you could apply to a load of Panthers free agent acquisitions.

You could make the argument that Marty Hurney wasn't necessarily bad at finding free agents. He just sucked at valuing how much to pay them.

i think he was very hit or miss, leaning more on the miss side of things esp. in regards to WRs and he overvalued pretty much everyone drafted, FA, whatever....he was out of control.

the fact that he never really had a problem negotiating deals with rosenhaus should have been a red flag. i'm sure he loved dealing with hurney.

With a guy who spent the last twelve years as a pro personnel guy, I'd say the odds of us being more active in free agency go up.

But then there's that salary cap situation... :(

Easily fixed with cutting several players. and maybe restructuring one or two.

At this point, Gamble has become expendable. Jordan Gross, even though he's our good LT, he's regressed and isn't getting younger. Time to cut ties with him too. Beason, he's borderline expendable. I'd like to see him get traded to NYG for a player or a draft pick.

If Gettleman does this, he'd be saving a lot of money, just to get under the cap. But probably not enough to sign a huge FA. Honestly I don't want a huge FA, I just want a guy at a position that we need to address, doesn't matter if he's a huge name, if he can play and will play for a moderate amount of money. Come on over.

if by blue chip you mean one of the high profile big money/overpriced guys that go quickly...nope. won't happen. not the panthers way of doing things and not the gettleman way of doing things from what i can tell. the typical panthers way is one i don't agree with because it focuses too narrowedly on the draft for addressing needs.

the gettleman way, though, is what he said in his first presser. find value in FA to fill holes but look to sign guys on short-term and affordable deals. i suspect he'll be use it more he'll be much more effective in finding quality guys to fill holes without having to break the bank. he's a guy that can spot talent anywhere that is often over looked. i'm fine with not going after one of the high end guys because i think that overall gettleman will make better used of FA than we are accustomed to.

Honestly though we really don't need superstar talent in FA. We have enough star power on this team, we really need to focus on improving the bottom of our roster. We need more reliable guys that are backups, special teamers and role-players.

I don't think Young is worth the headache.

Trading Beason isn't gonna help the cap situation, the hit would be akin to just cutting him.

550k? sure, why not? i doubt he'd make it through cuts in the fall, though.

At first I was completely against this... but for 550k? Thats almost too cheap not to take a look at. On the field he'd be a great fit, he's got elite speed which our receiving corps is in dire need of and Cam would be an upgrade from Stafford.

I'm not sure we're really going to know the extent of how well Gettleman can be in FA until a year or two from now when he's got more of our iffy contracts off the books.

The biggest thing I want to see is how we manage our existing players this offseason. I expect it will be pretty different from what we're used to.

short leash made of a very thin string.

I'm with you on this one Rayzor. I'm tired of seeing this team pass up talent because of character issues.

Alfonzo Dennard...Vontaze Burfict...

You lose nothing with trying, if it doesn't work out know when to cut your losses. In this case, if he signs for the minimum, it wouldn't be a loss.

yep.

i think there are holes on the starting roster that can be filled well enough by FA who simply just don't suck. we don't need stars on the interior DLine or right side of the OL. just big guys that won't be pushed around. we need safeties that don't blow assignments.

the front seven on the defense will make us get by without star power in the secondary. cam and the RB corps can do more with less on the OL as long as they are gelling on the line.

i think the only place that i think we need a high caliber player added is to the WR corps.
