Steve Smith knocks the read option...

So I guess the fact that we couldn't score in the first half of the SB and came up 3 points short points to the fact that the I Formation has no future in the NFL.

All of these arguments about first half versus the second half reminds me of before the draft two years ago when people were trying to say "Derp.. yeah but Cam struggled for one half of the Alabama game, therefore obviously Cam is teh suck!1!!"

I also noticed that every opportunity to pop Kaepernick they did. Even if they didn't take him to the ground. He got hit and pretty solid.

Sure they scored 31 Points but none of it came off the Read Option. Kaepernick score was on a scramble not the read option.

I like it in our offense but as a play not a base.

If the 49ers start the season with it as a base. They will face a similar fate as we did.

The biggest thing for us is once we had it as a play Cam really started to play well. One point I read was trying to throw out of the Read Option put him out of balance and made his throws erratic.

I define defenses by how many points they give up.

I don't give offenses credit for surpassing greatness when they can only put up six points without the other side losing one of their best players.

Credit the Niners all you want to, but until the Ravens lost Ngata and started showing their age, they weren't scoring and were getting blown out. All the excuses in the world won't change that.

So now you think me saying that the 49ers shot themselves in the foot with unforced turnovers is me giving credit to their offense??

If anything it is the exact opposite. I am saying the 49ers offense was to blame for only scoring 6 points because of the two unforced turnovers, it had almost zero to do with anything the Raven's did on defense. Because the Raven's couldn't stop them.

I knew the game was going to be close even at halftime, because the 49ers offense was dominating the Raven's defense, and it was clear that the Raven's defense could not stop them even if they did only have 6 points. The only team that stopped the 49ers offense last night was the 49ers.

Where is Marguide with his chart? The read option is useful. I like it a lot. But using it as your base formation DOES NOT work. I would like to know how many read option plays they ran that game, how many yards they gained, what situations they ran those plays in. And then I will give a definitive answer. You say, Oh they scored 31 points using the read option, They Didn't.

Marguide had made a chart about first half and second half read option plays from this past season. When Cam was under center, and we sprinkled in the read option, we were very, very successful. This is not rocket science.

And when they went out of there way to hit him....SF normally had a nice run.

too much read option was an issue for us bc of how horrible the OL play was this year....you need lanes.

Did they dislike Chudzinski or just his use of the read option?

No way to know unless someone speaks out.

I just have a feeling they didn't like the way hf game planned last year, specifically the first half. There have been reports about him being aloof to advice from the players.

The read option was not the issue with us, it was how we tried to run our offense and losing or missing assignments coupled with Cam occasionally misreading the defense.

Plus a read option is not a formation and it is not a base offense. It is a type of play.

Some of you guys are basing your entire assumptions on what the Panthers tried to do this year. It is not a very accurate picture of how an offense that wants to run a lot of read option is supposed to do.

I have yet to see a team that uses the read option as "the basis of their offense".

I understand what you're getting at, but base and basis of an offense are semantically different. Anyway, the Panthers arguably used the read option as a base offense during the first part of last season.

When people say Read Option and "Base Offense" or "Base", every body knows its a play and not a formation. So you and others, don't have to keep repeating that. What they're really addressing/saying, is 'when you use or run it too much'. Even players have used the word "base" or "base offense" when addressing it.

Yes, the Pistol offense (which RG3 and Kaep run) is a better formation to use the read option out of, cause the Panthers with the Shotgun (with the back next to Cam), kinda gave it away that is was a running play in several ways. However, if you notice, Russell Wilson and the Seahawks, ran it out of the Shot gun as well. And I think the reason is simple: It's because both Cam and Wilson are more drop back/pocket passers at this stage than Kaep and especially RG3, so there more comfortable and successful operating out of more conventional sets.

And that's how I would like it. I want Cam to develop his drop back/pocket QB skills first and foremost. That other stuff can always be added in or used occasionally (depending on the defense). Cam's going to get enough yards, just on scrambling plays when there's nothing there down field.
