Warren Moon, Doug Williams on CBS Sports In Detail On Cam, R. Wilson, RG3, Kaepernick (A Bit) & Legacy

For young NFL QB watchers and Panther fans: If you missed it, Warren Moon was on CBS Superbowl Live show (CBS Sports Network) yesterday, along with Doug Williams earlier discussing Cam, Russell Wilson, RG3 prominently and Kaepernick (to a lesser degree).

Williams came up first. But I'm posting Moon ahead, who's segment had the more prominent discussion about Cam, Wilson and RG3 (and originally, I was only going to do Moon's comments). Lol.

This is for the Huddler's that missed it, and would like to know what was said on a Network show from two legends to their respective host/NFL players, regarding players of local interest in Cam and Russell Wilson (with RG3 and Kaepernick thrown in). The shows host were Greg Gumbel, London Fletcher and Solomon Wilcots. It's a decent sized post. But they had a decent sized, good discussion you usually don't get on a national show or network.

After discussing his college, CFL career, and the in-exact science of NFL drafting (Moon wasn't drafted), London Fletcher asked Moon (kinda out the blue) about mentoring Cam, and he said:

"Tremendous athletic talent"..."When you first meet him, it's "Overwhelming. He's like 6'6", 250lbs (you can overhear someone off camera go "geesh")"... "He can make every throw in the book"... "And there's no hitch in his throw, so you don't have to worry about that".... 'A Mis-understood kid, cause of the controversy in College'...Wilcots interrupts and says "You gave the dimensions of Cam Newton, he's almost out of Central casting

". Simultaneously chatter and murmuring for a bit, then Moon says, "yeah, If you were going to build a Quarterback (you hear collective agreement), Cam would be the one". I'm sure Huddler's liked that/those comment/s. Lol.

Moon (who, by the way, always gives excellent analysis on Cam's talents), added later, that Cam and the other new young gun QB's need to really be on top of everything and know football from both sides (offense and defenses), film study, time given and especially from the neck up, along with their professional approach. He felt the "Neck Up" was really important and stressed it.

He also talked about how hard you must study and how other players can follow you based off that hard work. It's leading by example. He added, that's what Russell Wilson did with Seattle.

Moon, a current Seattle Seahawk broadcaster went on to say: 'Mature beyond his years at 24 yrs old'... 'Father mentored him very well. Had him out at 9:30am on weekends, throwing out routes', etc...'The way this guy takes care of his body and eats. It takes guys years to learn this, and he came into the league like that.' Moon also felt the baseball experience, may have matured him as well.

Moon said other Seattle players wondered about Wilson, when he first got there, like "Is he a suck up to the coach or something"?. Almost like he was too good to be true. LOL. And Moon says "no, he just works that hard". Great story.

About the proliferation of good young QB's in the NFL recently, Moon said 'they learn passing earlier now (spread offenses in college) and are tutored at a younger age (he said he's tutoring some high schoolers himself now)'. Remember Huddler's, both Cam and Luck had George Whitfield as a QB guru (note: another Moon connection/recommendation, since Oliver Luck, played back up to Moon with the Oilers, and they're still friends), besides Cam having Weinke and Dorsey later at IMG.

London Fletcher, added both RG3 (mentioned his locker was next to his) and Wilson have the "It factor". And for the Cam nuts, feeling neglected: If I remember correctly, London Fletcher was the same Redskin that bigged up Cam a lot last year and talked about that great over the shoulder throw he made to Smith in the left corner of the end zone. Remember that throw? yeah, it was beautiful. So let him give RG3 a little love.

Earlier, Superbowl winning, Washington Redskins QB, Doug Williams was on preceding moon, waxing poetic about his historical Superbowl win, the Rooney Rule, and the much discussed young group of "mobile QB's invading the league the past two seasons (you got the sense he got to see RG3 and Cam play--who he noted more than the other two).

Williams summarized, "pocket QB's aren't going anywhere". He later added, "you see the beauty of Russel Wilson, Robert Griffith, Kaepernick and Cam Newton; not only do they have unique abilities (i.e. can run), but they can also throw the football from the pocket". About his historical and their current performances, Williams said "It's all about an opportunity. If you give a man an opportunity, no telling what he can do".....True indeed!

CBS Sports has a video of Williams speaking about himself, the Rooney Rule, etc., but none of him discussing the 'new' QB's. Nonetheless, I'll leave that link. So far, there is no video of Moon's talk. But if/when I see it, I'll post it. Don't worry, my quotes, paraphrases and summaries are well representative of the overall discussion. Here's D. Williams video, with out the young QB talk.

Yes, unless I'm forgetting someone, you can argue that Marino and Warren Moon were the two greatest QB's never to win an NFL title. I know you can throw Dan Fouts in that group as well, cause I don't think he won a title either?

My list (for what ever that's worth)

1) Cam-poor record. But competitive team. And no young QB carries a bigger burden. Great Physical & skill set.

2) Wilson-you can even place Wilson ahead of Cam & Luck as a overall passing QB. Cam's size & legs edge past him.

3) Luck-Has big load to carry like Cam. Like Wilson & Cam, can truly throw from the pocket. Underrated scrambler. Mixes it up around the field.

4) Kap-maybe ahead of Luck? Juries still out on his small sample size. Seems jittery in pocket with time.

5) RG3-would have had him here before the injury. Maybe a head of Kaep before. Too much motion in the pocket. Rarely stands still and surveys.

6) Dalton-Decent QB. Average, inaccurate arm, with all world WR that bails him out too often.

7) Tannehill-Good athleticism and arm. Just needs patience. Maybe be 5th or 6h on this list next year. Promising!

8) Ponder. Decent game manager type QB, who can hold down the fort. Competent.

9) Locker-great athleticism, but learning curve hasn't caught up to him yet. Hasn't made CK2000 better. And he needs it. LOL

10) Weeden-Let's see what Chud can do with him?

11) Gabbert-Just awful. But he's working at it. He better. May lose his job soon?

PS: I know he's third year. So I won't list him. But Stafford (who's very inconsistent and a stat padder), would fall in the Cam, Luck, Wilson category of proficient young NFL pocket passers. He has a great arm & size as well.

Yeah, I forgot about Jim Kelly to. He went to 4 superbowls, with a great offense. A Norwood FG short, against the Giants, and he could have had at least one. Damn, I did forget him! LOL

Randall Cunningham was great to. But of course, he has a lot of competition, for best QB's who never won a Supe Bowl. LOL

I'm jealous of Kaepernick... He wouldn't seem nearly as good if it weren't for the team. I bet I could go out there and run for 20 yards untouched with that oline. ..and that's saying something. He is not nearly as good as he is made out to be...

And look at his arms. The dude looks like a thug out there.

And I agree wit Dan Fouts. That's why I listed him. lol. However, since you brought him up, I went back and bolded his name, just so he doesn't seem left out or neglected. LOL

I hear you, but Luck just doesn't impress me. He reminds me of Bradford a little. Not necessarily in style, but in the hype surrounding him. Also, it is really hard for me to put a rookie ahead of a vet, even if the vet is only in his second or 3rd year.
