Accorsi actually got here early

Player evaluation is something that has been sorely lacking in the Panthers org. We've nailed our 1st round picks, but really how hard is that? Pick BPA and you are generally good to go... otherwise (with some exceptions of course) our mid - low round picks haven't been that great...

i think it's pretty hard, i can't think of any team that has had our first round success, minus trading next years first for a second. some say rounds 3-7 are the most important, which i don't disagree, but a first bust can be detrimental and we have been fortunate enough to evade that under Hurns. We can pick out quite a few guys from the past 5 drafts and see there are plenty of bad picks in the first round, suggesting that it isn't as easy as you believe.

My perception of their decline has been that they've let their roster get a little old without backfilling well enough, something that's kind of uncharacteristic for them. At least that's what I've heard. I haven't analyzed their roster myself (only do that with the Panthers)

You would expect Gettleman to approach it the way the Giants do. Again, I won't claim to be an expert on the Giants, but my perception is that they're an adaptive team. Statements I've heard from Gettleman make me think he leans that way too, though I suppose we'll see soon enough.

i agree. he seems to be a lot more adaptive and opportunistic than anything else, same with the giants culture. that hasn't been our culture.

idk, maybe they've just made it look easy... but we have clearly had 1st round success while our later rounds have been pretty sketchy...

Interesting thought about that.

Hurney always came off in interviews sounding like a confident guy, but the action of essentially asking someone to second guess you (something he apparently did more than once) doesn't really sound like something a confident person would do.

If he truly wasn't confident totally confident in himself, it's probably no shock that the culture within the front office became rather lax. It's hard to influence the people around you when you don't have full confidence in what you're doing.

I have a feeling Gettleman's a change from that.

If you wanna be a perennial contender, you have to get some good players out of the later rounds.

Short term success can be had by other means, but in the salary cap era, long term, sustained success definitely requires smart drafting.

I'd also be surprised if there wasn't some reluctance to him being an outsider and potential changes in the way they've been doing things. doesn't matter if it can make things better, change is scary and for some, paralyzing.

we're talking about a whole culture change and these things aren't completely welcomed by all.

Harder than you think.. Close to 50% of the first round picks taken prove not to be worthy of the selection down the road.

It's not so hard when you pick the same positions that are plug and play half the time and your fanbase sets lower standards for their players than players from other teams.

What I have been saying for years. However, notice that Hurney did not draft positions that require fits and/or are more challenging to gauge NFL success.

QB: Instead of drafting one, he gives Jake "Tommy John" DelHomme a contract three or four times what he would have been given elsewhere. He should have drafted a QB too. Yes, he drafted Cam Newton, but RR was forcing that issue. Besides, Marty had no choice.

CB: He drafted Gamble in the first and that is it. and Richard Marshall in the second. Ooooh.

DT: He did not draft Jenkins. Never a first rounder. He drafted Carstens, A. Ellison, C. Irvin, and McClain. Iron curtain,

WR: He did not draft Smith. Never a first rounder. He drafted K. Colbert, Carter, R. Robinson, D. Jarrett, Pilares, Edwards, Gettis, Lafell, Adams. That is pretty terrible.

Hurney drafted tackles (Gross, Otah), RBs (Williams and Stewart) LBs (Beason, Kuechly, Davis) a QB, a CB (gamble) and that is about it.

Here is the kicker: He sucked and he had scouts and the coaching staff telling him what they needed and who they wanted.

The year when he drafted when Fox was a lame duck are telling=--he sucked.

Guess that's what you get when you hire a sportswriter/cap manager to build your roster.

This is why I severely doubt the notion that Brandon Beane will be groomed as an eventual replacement. We've been down that road already and it didn't lead to a good place.

Depends on who's doing the grooming. If he can study at the feet of people like Gettleman and Accorsi, he might turn into good GM material. He's still young enough to not be set in his ways.
