The worst part of this story is not so much what happened in the past, but the current state of affairs.

When the previous GM brought in another GM because he was in over his head, them the other GM turns into the search committee for the next GM. Then the new GM calls in another GM shortly after taking the job because he's having a difficult time figuring out just how screwed they are going forward.

I'm pretty sure Hurney just used a draft guide from Harris Teeter...the early ones.. Duke Robinson and Everett Brown . Early draft guides had them in the top 15 at one point.

In a radio interview a while back, Hurney made a point of saying that he never looks at draft guides and didn't see any need to.

On the flipside, in a profile article, Ravens Assistant GM Eric DeCosta said he does. Not as his primary source obviously, but just as a 'covering all bases' sort of thing.

The Pats are also a case of just plugging make-do pieces around their brilliant core. Hell, they could have probably gotten enough out of Eric Shelton to have success. So they can get away with loading midround talent, whereas we didn't have that core in place until Cam got here.

I'm always amused by the contrast in approaches between the Patriots and the Steelers.

Like you said, the Patriots go after good players and adapt the system based around who they have.

The Steelers, however, have a set system that they believe in and go after the players who best fit that system.

Both teams have been perennial contenders (although the Steelers are down a bit lately) so it's interesting to debate which approach is better.

i think adapting is better just because of how quickly things are evolving. steelers haven't done that so well and i think thats part of the reason for their decline.

My perception of their decline has been that they've let their roster get a little old without backfilling well enough, something that's kind of uncharacteristic for them. At least that's what I've heard. I haven't analyzed their roster myself (only do that with the Panthers) :lol:

You would expect Gettleman to approach it the way the Giants do. Again, I won't claim to be an expert on the Giants, but my perception is that they're an adaptive team. Statements I've heard from Gettleman make me think he leans that way too, though I suppose we'll see soon enough.

the only reason I got excited about Duke Robinson was bc he was the number 1 OL prospect in their rankings..which came out like before the combine...did not really check it out too much before i bought it..whats the point in being first?,,,unless its just for the dumb guys like me who did not bother to check out its validity.

I almost think Richardson hired him so he have someone to talk football with.

I get hold of every draft preview and football magazine I can on an annual basis. I don't generally throw the previews away either. Guess I'm a bona fide junkie.

Player evaluation is something that has been sorely lacking in the Panthers org. We've nailed our 1st round picks, but really how hard is that? Pick BPA and you are generally good to go... otherwise (with some exceptions of course) our mid - low round picks haven't been that great...

Harder than you think.. Close to 50% of the first round picks taken prove not to be worthy of the selection down the road.

he should have been hosed off the deck midseason 2010 with fox following him the minute the falcons got done reaming us.

it's true that he may have been swallowed up in a crisis of richardson's own doing but the NFL isn't fair and doesn't account for that.
