Clausen as #2

Happy Panther

Recommended Posts

Posted this in another thread- same subject. This is why Clausen is not being released until after the 2013 season:

Well, couple other issues come into play. First and foremost is the contract he's under:

7/28/2010: Signed a four-year, $6.3 million contract. The deal includes $2.533 million guaranteed and a fourth-year escalator that could boost Clausen's 2013 base salary to $2.85 million. Even if Clausen does not activate the escalator, his 2013 salary is fully guaranteed.

2013: $575,000

2014: Free Agent

The pickle (pun intended) the Panthers find themselves in is simple- they have to keep Jimmy for 2 reasons, which I'm not sure they ever saw coming. First of which being they are in salary cap hell and cutting Clausen only adds to those woes, and I think that 4th year escalator may come into play as a cap issue should the Panthers and he decide to part ways. His salary is fully guaranteed in 2013.

The second part of that is Derek Anderson is a free agent and unless the Panthers make an effort to re-sign him, this will be the 3rd time in the last 4 years the Panthers are actively seeking a QB. They cut Clausen and let Anderson walk to Cleveland or somewhere else and the Panthers are having to come up with some cash they don't have to replace not one, but 2 QBs.

Bottom line- Clausen will finish out his contract through the 2013 season and will end up on a beach back in SoCal next year doing something outside of football.

But in doesn't no good for Carolina....

Cam needs a decent backup. He takes too many hits for Jimmy to be it. Makes more sense to take it on the chin and dump Clausen. He serves no purpose.

Gentlemen is going to have to make moves with 2014 in mind....

The issue is we are so far over the cap and have multiple free agent needs. Will Gettlemen find another $1M+ to bring in a decent backup?

valid point, on the flip side if Cam goes down we are beyond screwed and Rivera is pretty much guaranteed to lose his job.....with DA we might have still been able to win a few games in Cam's absence (assuming it's not prolonged in which case the season would be lost anyway)

cam WONT go down!! its not impossible, but unless he's getting blindsided, he absolutely controls the ammount of contact he takes/dishes out, he treats the gridiron like he's at recess on the playground...dont wanna even look at the #2 from that aspect.

what makes sense to me is to trade for terrelle pryor. his brains arent there, but thats why i think he will make a perfect backup for cam, because there will be no question who the starter will be...ever. pryors size and playing style make him the closest clone to cam in the league, and could most likely develop into a game manager getting training time in an offense that caters to his specific set of attributes...we would lose accuracy if he plays instead of cam, but the offense shouldnt have to change that much to cater to a different playing style. hoping cam doesnt get injured, we could also use pryor at other positions (6'5, 235lbs, elite athlete) and not just have a qb sitting the bench wasting a roster spot...make use of the backup instead. same age as cam, dresses on gameday like he wants to be cam, and we could probably pick him up for one of the high contract guys we are likely to cut, if not, i would not trade for anything less than a 5th rounder and pickles.
