Gettleman not sold on read option

If we try to make Cam a traditional drop back passer, you are going to sabotage his career. What keeps Cam from being average, is his running ability. That part of his game is what makes him dangerous and impossible to defend.

What worries me about older guys like Gettleman, is that they are always the last ones on the curve so to speak.

They have this attitude that "This will never work, we have always done it this way and we will always do it this way". As if the NFL has become static and is never evolving.

I hope that Gettleman is a guy that understands that college and high school football has evolved, and in the NFL if you are not evolving to deal with it you are devolving just to spite it.

Thank you! Might I add, Cam is not a gifted passer. Cam is not gonna dissect an offense by taking what the defense give him. He is a call-a-play-make-a-play in the passing game guy. Now you take away his design runs. Come on, now! Even Cam said it himself that if he were a great passer like Brees he'd stay in the pocket and throw darts all day. Although I am paraphrasing. That is NOT good, I tell ya.

But Cam has great vision, great jukes, is much bigger and knows when to slide or run out of bounds.

I like him running out of the pocket (with space), than the consistent hard hitting short yardage runs for first downs or TD's. That's what they need to lessen, be careful of or stop (especially with Tolbert there).

You're funny. You notice I mentioned Vick, right? I remember Cam had a few small finger injuries running the ball like a full back on short yardages. That crap needs to stop not the read option. There is a reason full backs are 280lbs. I really hate this organization and I like Cam. Don't know what to do.

Why are you posting here if you hate the panthers?

This crappy franchise better recognize that or Cam will walk. I don't think Cam would appreciate it if he can't do his first down signal or TD celebration and his team is not winning while getting hammered every time he drops back. Bad combination, that's the crap that gets entire coaching staff and GM fired. Cam into Eli? Why!?

On the bright side I am now convinced you're trolling - I refuse to believe anyone could accidentally just miss the point that badly.

Thank you for the clarification.

This is what sold it for me. He's seriously arguing that Cam is going to be more upset about the fact that they are losing because he's not getting the chance to do his signature celebrations while doing so?

Cam takes losing better when he's allowed to do the superman??

Are you fuging kidding me?

Yes. If he was a great passer like Bress, I certainly would want him to sit in the pocket all day and rip other defenses up.

Why limit him to an average passer? Why can't he get better?

He had Shula as a QB coach for fug's sake. His main issue is his footwork which is very correctable by someone who has had experience in the position and has coached the fundamentals for a living. Get that footwork down and everything else will fall into place.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't use his legs as a weapon. But sooner than later, other teams will catch on and shut it down. You'll see that happen to RGII (if he is healthy), Wilson, Kaep, etc next year.

He's going into his 3rd year as a NFL QB. He'll improve as a passer.

Ya think that assessment will change if Flacco wins the Superbowl and Kaep gets hit so hard that his spine flies out of his ass-pipe?

Nobody says Kaep won't have a bad game in his life time. Everybody do. But he'll have more great games where he doesn't get hit hard. Kaep is a big dude, playing for a great organization behind a great OL. That's not gonna happen. They have a game plan unlike the panthers. But wishfull thinking though.

There are people who are going to want to see the read-option as our primary running play no matter what. Those people think Cam is invincible, think Cam will never get hit hard enough to get hurt doing so, and don't understand the difference between an OL blocking when they don't know where the ball is going vs when they do. Their opinion isn't going to change if Kaep gets obliterated - they'll just respond with "but Cam FREAKIN Newton BRAH" and repeat the same arguments for not cutting down on the amount of the option we use (particularly the first part of the season).

Unfortunately I'm also slowly deciding that they can't be reasoned with. Probably for the best where my own sanity is concerned.

Sad freakin' Panda

You make the read option sounds like the QB is running on every play. NO. The QB can play an entire game and NEVER keeps on the read option at all. The QB can keep giving or going on play action all day. But the threat is always there. Why would an offense with that luxury eliminate even the threat? I don't get it.

If you are going to pull random quotes why not from the guy we are actually talking about??

I didn't realize you defined random quotes as quotes directly pertinent to my point. And actually, I don't think I was talking about Cam Newton(you'll see neither direct or indirect reference to him in my post), rather I was addressing the general misconception of why blindside hits are bad(they're bad because they offer the QB no chance to escape them, not because they are more likely to injure him).

Regardless, all that that quote is indicating is that Cam Newton prefers to try and use his athleticism to either soften the blow, or escape it all together. I don't think you'll find many guys who will say they would rather not see the tackler rather than seeing the tackler and trying to make a move to avoid it or lessen it; that does not however mean that a blindside tackler is more likely to injure the passer, because quite frankly, he's not.

I find these type of statements Ironic, considering you can argue, that Cam is advanced as any two year QB in league history (outside of Dan Marino and some others) with his passing. And I'm not just talking about stats. I'm speaking about his pocket presence, accuracy, down field throwing and big play ability. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was Cam.

Do you realize that QB's like John Elway absolutely sucked his first few years when he had the responsibly to carry the load like Cam (and so many others). We won't even get into Peyton's first season and all his INT's, nor the famous early struggles of his 2X superbowl winning brother in NY, who wasn't half the QB Cam is now at the same stage.

And please don't bring up guys like Flacco, Big Ben, Kaepernick etc., cause all those guys don't have to shoulder the load for their team the way Cam does. They're protected. And of course Aaron Rogers and other similar greats, sat down behind other great QB's their first few years. Cam was thrown right into the fire (with one year BSC experience to boot), and has accounted quite well for himself. The sky's the limit. And the rest is on Cam to get better, and his team to surround him with 'Big Ole Man', play makers and touch down makers!

Give Cam a chance to develop more, and benefit from a better offensive line, run game and play calling this year and in the future, before you set the guys career in stone.

And that comment by Cam, was more him paying Dapp to Bree's and those other guys, as well showing how much harder he was willing to work to get where they're at.

read option set up to throws for Griffen....despite his comp % he has not wow'd as a passer. He throws screens and the same route to the TE over the middle all game every game. Read option sets up his predictable passing game.

What amazes me is that it's almost a free play if the receivers catch the ball. And we have the ability to do it too, now they're telling me they're scratching it off our playbook. That's irritating. I know somebody's getting fired next year.
