New Study Finds Brain Damage in Living Ex-NFL Players

Brain scans performed on five former NFL players revealed images of the protein that causes football-related brain damage — the first time researchers have identified signs of the crippling disease in living players.

Researchers who conducted the
described the findings as a significant step toward being able to diagnose the disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, in living patients.

“I’ve been saying that identifying CTE in a living person is the Holy Grail for this disease and for us to be able make advances in treatment,” said Dr. Julian Bailes, a Chicago neurosurgeon and one of the study’s co-authors. “It’s not definitive and there’s a lot we still need to discover to help these people, but it’s very compelling. It’s a new discovery.”

Dozens of former players — including 34 who played in the NFL — have been diagnosed with CTE, a neurodegenerative disease linked to dementia, memory loss and depression. The disease, which researchers say is triggered by repeated head trauma, can be confirmed only by examining the brain after death. CTE was discovered earlier this month in the brain of former Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, who committed suicide last May by shooting himself in the chest.

I'm not sure it's surprise as much as it's good that they may finally be able to diagnose the problem.

True... and I hope they find ways to mitigate it... because as long as guys are getting paid eleventy billion dollars to play these sports, they're gonna keep doing it.

I'd get out there and bash my head if it meant my family was going to be financially secure for generations.

This is akin to a new study that finds sexually transmitted disease in living prostitutes... it is a hazard of the job.

haha...was just going to write the same thing

more importantly than diagnose or anything like that, I think it goes more to opening the door for lawsuits in the future. at least waivers!!! do pro athletes sign waivers anymore?!

If only they'd try and start new rules to lower the amount of head blows! We fans won't bitch at it at all!

Betcha 100 bux that new rules will be subjective and refs will throw the flag based on whether a player jumps right up or not, or whether the offending player has a bad reputation.

    • I don't think Rodgers but probably not for the political reasons I bet a lot of posters are motivated by. I just think he is not the QB for the Panthers, at all.
    • Sun Devils just scored another TD on BYU, 14-0
    • It wasn't great but  the 2022 NYG won 9 of 16 games plus a playoff game. He had a 92.5 passer rating. 15 pass TDs 3200 yards, 7 rushing TD, 700 yards 6 fumbles 3 lost.  His first season he had 18 fumbles lost 11. Wow.  Anyhow he had problems in 2023 with injuries and didn't win poo before tearing his ACL. This year, no Barkley, not good, but you know.... these ACLs take a while and it was right and he throws right so pushes off of it.  I agree it doesn't hurt to let that guy compete cheap. You don't hand him the job like with Bryce or NYG with him.  When I look at what we have been saddled with, he doesn't look worse and has the physical advantage. So I don't get the umbrage given our situation. This "No we won't settle for anything less that the best" attitude and then taking Bryce Young was pathetic and I think that attitude brought us to where we are. That's where that poo gets you. Away from Mayfield, away from Darnold, even away from PJ - just to replace them with an inferior PJ.  At the same time I am not really advocating for the guy just looking at it objectively. It could be another guy with the same story. And yes the odds of him getting it are low but the numbers and performance from 2022 are for sure better than we see with Bryce even after a season of major propping him up with better players around him. Take a look don't take a look he fails or he doesn't fail...   to instead sit here and be happier with what we have is bullshit.
