CHARLOTTE, NC (Charlotte Business Journal, Erik Spanberg) -

The city of Charlotte has ample motivation for making a deal with the Carolina Panthers — and it starts with succession plans for majority owner Jerry Richardson. A source close to the team told Charlotte Business Journal's Erik Spanberg that Richardson, 76 years old and four years removed from heart-replacement surgery, has mandated the NFL franchise be sold two years after his death.

The revelation marks the first time details have been disclosed about the Panthers' fate beyond the life of Richardson, the founding owner.

Mark and Jon Richardson, his sons, worked as Panthers executives before Jerry Richardson forced them out in 2009. Until then, everyone assumed Mark and Jon Richardson would own and operate the team after their father's death. Since then, Richardson and the Panthers have declined to disclose succession plans.

And what does all of this talk about ownership have to do with taxpayer money helping pay for renovations at Bank of America Stadium? Simple, really. The Panthers need to be tied to the city before anyone not named Richardson becomes the owner of the franchise.

An easy way to do that is to commit to the stadium overhaul the Panthers have been working on for much of the past year. The price tag: $125 million from the city, most likely through an additional 1 percent tax on restaurant meals and bar tabs. City Council heard a presentation from Richardson Monday night during a closed session, and, based on the few remarks offered by a handful of witnesses, he seems to have made a convincing argument.

If JR wants to see the NFC Championship at BOA Stadium, he needs to sell out now. This team is exactly what Atlanta fans dealt with for years when Rankin Smith owned them. Rankin's team had the same revolving door of personnel and couldn't create the chemistry to make for a respected team.

The buck stops on JR's desk, the history of how he has run this franchise from his letting Bill Polian go, to Bill Rosinski, Hurley, the nepotism and eventual firing of his two sons, the air is out of the tent and we will deal with another year of training camp, all the cheerleader skirts back on to get us to drink the Kool Aid, and next year, the firing of Rivera.

I wouldn't worry about it. People really need to start putting key words in their thread titles like I have alluded to before. It would make the search function much more efficient.

The search function searches the entire thread, not just thread titles unless specified otherwise.

I agree, the best way JR can help this franchise is to sell NOW while he's alive. He's the biggest anchor weighing down the Panthers.

That may be true, but unless this works differently than what I have become accustomed to, the emphasis is put on titles. Notwithstanding whether that is the case, after the search function produces its results, it would facilitate human eyes being able to easily find information without having to pan for gold within threads with "cute" titles.

It searches the entire thread for the term that you searched for. When you click on the thread title from the list generate by your search, it jumps you directly to the triggered terms within said thread.

Floppin, I believe you. But, my way is still the most efficient.
