I wish we would mix the Pistol offense in with our scheme more.

Does anyone know if Shula has experience running the Pistol?

the Shanahans didn't have experience with it either. The great thing about the pistol is you can basically just run a typical NFL offense out of it. It is an easier transition for OC's with NFL experience or have only run pro style offenses their whole career.

I think all of these offenses can work including what we have been doing. My main complaint with our offense is that we need to pick up the pace. Get in and out of the huddle with 20-25 seconds still on the play clock instead of 15-12 seconds like we have been doing. That gives us a chance to adjust or change the play based on what the defense is showing us. These last two years we haven't done that, so if the defense is giving us a look that has our play well defended, we just run it anyway and hope for the best. in order for our offense to work it has to be more flexible at the line of scrimmage.

The Redskins run the Pistol to perfection. I always hated that Chud wouldn't do more with this formation. He'd only get in it like one or two times a game, like it was some type of secret formation that he wanted to keep in his back pocket or some poo.

Not sure how it would fit in with the current Panther offense, QB and most importantly new OC in Shula (who probably has enough things to worry about)??

I like it. I didn't, but after two years of watching DW take a shotgun handoff and get a yard in what was supposed to be a very explosive offense, screw it. Give our backs a chance. Carolina was 2nd most in shotgun leaguewide.

I'd like to see more of this also

Most of these NFL coaches are pretty sharp guys with loads of experience. Incorporating new ideas into their playbook isn't a big deal.

The right side is the only side to need complete overhaul, and even improving the RG or RT would bring us to competent.

Agreed, but that's assuming Shula is "sharp". And he hasn't been an OC or HC for a while.

Hopefully, he will be. However past experiences has shown he's been a not so great play caller. And who's to say what he'll do during a game, especially an important one??

Just look at the 'innovative', celebrated Chud for example, and all the bone head moves/plays he did this past season as an OC and play caller. I get your point though.

you put newton in the pistol offense, and there are few defenses that are going to be able to deal with him. long term newton > vick, imo.

true. he's a lot more athletic than people think when they look at his cerebral qualities.

kind of the same way i think newton is a better passer and smarter than most people give him credit for. he isn't the one trick pony that many believe. as a passer i really compare him to big ben. i think he's that good.

what newton will need is an offense designed around his talents. mroe than likely it will be something like the pistol offense. newton in the pistol offense would be downright lethal.

the advantage that luck has is that he would be able to fit in any offense and be good.

we'll most likely be changing the offense anyways. at least i hope we do.

the pistol wouldn't be that hard of an offesne to adjust to. much of what we have done already could be done easily out of that formation. you can do pretty much the same things you can with a QB under center, only it gives him the advantage of being three yards back.

i do think that newton has a big (and accurate) arm that is pretty equal to that of ben's. he can sit back and wait or buy time for things to develop downfield and already does a little reading of defenses. he watches the safeties and times his passes based on what they are doing. he's a lot smarter than what people think. i do agree that he may have to sit for a year while luck could probably start right away and do well, but if newton did start right away it wouldn't be the disaster that we have had with clausen. he's got some legs and can get himself ou of trouble. i also disagree with the idea that he wouldn't be able to pull off the type of running he did at auburn in the pros. he's got as much running ability and power as any RB coming out of college.

It is amazing that Shula has stayed employed every single year of his career considering how dumb some of you guys seem to think he is. Apparently all of these coaches are even less "sharp" for hiring him year in and year out, whether it is to be OC or as QB coach.

Hoge had a good segment on NFL Matchup this morning about how the Falcons shut down the read-option last week with the play of the DE and making sure they held their outside contain. Wilson didn't run the ball once out of the option.

It works, but anything you do in the NFL will get figured out by defenses... they're too smart and too fast. You have to change it up.

Send a lead blocker to take out the DE and run the QB out anyway.
