Continuity not Capability

at least chud was given some play calling responsibility prior to getting an OC job. whats shula been doing? serious question.

Only 5 years to look at since Alabama

Well, the last two have been spent at the QB coach for a young man that has more offensive production 2 yrs in than anyone in NFL history.

3 yrs prior? He spent coaching David Garrard how to play QB despite not having any WRs to throw to. Garrard all things considered wasn't bad and played pretty solid.

So what has he been doing? He has been coaching up QBs in the NFL and has a strong track record of doing such

New England has done that ever since Brady and Belichik have gotten there. There are other candidates that might have better resumes but he promotes from within.

How is New England being doing these last couple of years, anyone know?? :P

It's almost as if you actually dont get what the difference is.

What is the difference then?? We have a top 10 offense the past couple of seasons (much, much better than Hue Jackson's offenses) and a coach that knows that offense inside and out.

So enlighten me. Maybe I am missing something.

Okay so the Colts hired Luck's old Stanford OC to be their new OC, and guess what the major factor was for the hire, which was stated by the Colts organization.

That's right you guessed it, CONTINUITY..........

Small difference of course being that one is a winning team/franchise, the other is Carolina.

Also, if we are going to bash Shula at Alabama lets so it in context.

1st year- He took over a program that just got hammered by NCAA sanctions. Lost 21 scholarships over 3 years.

2nd year - he lost his star QB in the 3rd game (started 3-0)

3rd year - 10-2

4th year - disappointed

4 yrs, 1 losing record, under NCAA sanctions

again, the question has that experience involved calling plays because that's kind of important for his job. its relevant experience more than being a position coach.

whats has he done to improve as a play caller or decision maker? what relevant experience has he had where he was given a chance to hone his craft? what has he done to grow in that capacity? where has he shown he's capable of doing a better job?

again, i'm serious. i want to believe.

Hey guys... hey guys... remember that guy Hue Jackson who was the OC in Atlanta when they finished 29th in the league in PPG? Or the Hue Jackson that was the OC in Washington that finished 23rd in PPG?

I mean why hire a QB coach that already knows our offense when we can get an defensive backs and special teams coach for a team that has a worse offense than ours?

GAWD I wish we got that guy. He was awesome in Oakland!!! Fug this organization!!!!!

I sure don't. Not with Mike "The Juggernaut" Shula waiting in the wings.

Hue Jackson is great. I mean he has had that one year with his team in the top half of the NFL in PPG. We totally should blow up our offense for that guy's one season of success.

Isn't that obvious?

Shula is Rivera's best hope at keeping his job. Not because he is the best OC available, but because he does not have to completely overhaul the current offense.

Hiring an outsider offensive coordinator would mean the entire offensive staff would be gone and a completely new offensive system in place. A new playbook. New terminology for the players to learn. New chemistry to be developed between players and coaches. Often, this can take more than one season to start yielding results.

Rivera does not have more than one season. If the Panthers do not win this year, he is gone. He knows it, everyone knows it.

So put yourself in his shoes. Knowing you can only lose 7 games next season or your ass is fired, would you

1: Hire a completely new offensive staff and implement a new system knowing in all likelyhood it will take a good of time to develop into a good offense if ever at all. or...

2. Promote from within and hope the current offense can be good enough to get you 9 wins. No learning curve, fewer variables.

Lets be clear here. The Shula hire was not made because he was the best candidate. Shula was hired because it presented the best option for Rivera to possibly win 9 games next season. It was a last ditch short term job saving hire. Any considerations past 2013 are an afterthought.

And if we have a winning record next year I think all of us will be fine with the hire, and btw can you really blame him? Do you expect someone to have so much unselfishness in him that they're willing to cut their nose off to spite their face just so a team/company can be better after they've been fired?

If the team is happy, then that is all that matters.

Next year will be a different iteration of 2010. Fox knew he was gone, so he half-assed it. Rivera knows his life as a head coach is on the line so he is pulling out all of the stops.

speaking of Fox, this should look familiar.. The 08 and 09 drafts were also the result of a coach trying to pull out all the stops..

we haven't had a winning year since..
